John Dewey is associated with the Progressive Movement. He was born on October 20th, 1859 in Burlington, Vermont and died on June 1st, 1952 in New York City. Dewey went to college at the University of Vermont where he graduated in 1879. After college he taught at schools in Michigan and Minnesota for about 10 years. Then he became a professor of philosophy at the University of Chicago where he taught until 1904 when he went back to Columbia University as a professor of philosophy.
Dewey was very influential in his time because he was one of the main founders of what we now call progressive education. Progressive education is an educational movement that started around 1910 and continued on into the 1920s and 1930s. It focused on making education more practical for students and helping them develop skills that would be useful later in life rather than just teaching them facts that would only be useful for passing tests or exams (which was common practice at this time).
Philosopher believed that people should be able to learn things as they need them instead of memorizing facts just so they can pass tests or exams. He also believed that children should learn through experience rather than just being told what happened by someone else.
