The Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865. It was a war between the Northern and Southern states of America. The main cause of this war was an argument over slavery, which was a system in which African Americans were forced to work as slaves on plantations in America.
The North believed that slavery should be abolished because they felt that black people were human beings and should have rights like other human beings. They also thought that their economy would suffer if they allowed people to continue to own slaves. They argued that ending slavery would give them more workers who could help them build their economy and make money for themselves and their families.
On the other hand, the South did not want to give up slavery because they relied on it for their economy and livelihoods. They argued that they had been doing this way before America became independent from Britain, so why stop now? Also many white people owned black people as personal slaves or “chattel” property because they needed someone to do their work for them.
