Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most famous novel, was begun in October 1796. The first draft was completed in August 1797. It was originally titled First Impressions. The novel was published anonymously on January 28, 1813; at that time its title was Northanger Abbey. In March it was released in a three-volume set with a new title page: Pride and Prejudice by Miss Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice has been adapted for film, television, and stage. It has been translated into more than forty languages. Pride and Prejudice is one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels; it has been praised for its timeless themes and clever dialogue. In 2007, the novel was listed at number 16 on the BBC’s survey The Big Read. In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer named it as one of the 100 greatest novels written since 1923, while in 2004 the novel was listed at number 18 on the BBC’s survey The Big Read.
