The Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, when Odoacer deposed Emperor Romulus Augustulus. The Roman Empire was divided between East and West in 395 AD, when Emperor Theodosius I died. The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, when Odoacer deposed Emperor Romulus Augustulus. The Eastern Roman Empire continued until 1453 AD, when Constantinople fell to Ottoman Turks led by Sultan Muhammad II. Rome was sacked in 410 by the Visigoths under Alaric I; the Vandals sacked Rome in 455 under Gaiseric; and the Heruli sacked Rome in 455 under Odoacer. Burgundians led by King Gundobad sacked Rome in 455; and the Lombards led by King Rothari sacked Rome in 455 as well.
