Rachel Carson was an environmentalist who fought for the protection of our planet and its wildlife. She was particularly concerned about the use of pesticides and their impact on the environment, and she believed that we must respect and care for our natural world if we want to preserve it for future generations.
Carson was instrumental in raising public awareness about the dangers of DDT and other harmful chemicals. Her work helped to launch the modern environmental movement, which continues to spread today.
She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, as well as numerous awards from other organizations across the United States and around the world.
Born in 1907 in rural Pennsylvania, Carson studied biology at the University of Michigan before working as a scientist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Her first book, The Sea Around Us, was a huge success and made her a household name; she went on to publish many more books during her lifetime including Silent Spring (1962). She died of cancer in 1964 but left behind an incredible legacy that continues to inspire people all over the world to care for our planet today!
