S.E. Hinton was born on July 22, 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hinton’s first novel, The Outsiders, was published in 1967 when she was 18 years old. The book was inspired by her own experiences as a teenager in Tulsa and has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide; it remains Hinton’s most popular novel to date. Other books by Hinton include That Was Then, This Is Now (a 1986 sequel to The Outsiders that features many of the same characters) and Rumble Fish. She is also the author of Hawkes Harbor and Some of Tim’s Stories, two collections of short stories featuring young protagonists who face difficult situations and make bad decisions while trying to do what they believe is right; these books were published under the pseudonym “S. E. Hinton” rather than “Sandra”. Hinton has written several adult novels under her real name as well, including Tex, which won a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America; Boots (which also received a Spur Award); and Gone Crazy in Alabama. She has won various awards for her work, including the American Library Association’s Margaret A Edwards Award for lifetime achievement.
