There are many things that is wrong with the government voting system: long lines at polling stations, broken machines, voter intimidation, and more. We can at least take acknowledgment in the fact that, in theory anyway, all citizens in good standing, men and women alike, very much have the right to vote. This wasn’t always the case, though, of course. Black Americans didn’t have the constitutional right to vote until 1870, and it took women even longer to gain the right: the 19th Amendment didn’t pass until 1920, following a long debate. Some demonstrations of this great cause are; 1848 The convention’s Declaration of Sentiments. -Elizabeth Cady Stanton 1848 Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention- Susan B Anthony. 1920 proposed an Equal Rights Amendment- Alice Paul. Some famous suffragettes are Katherine ‘Kate’ Wilson Sheppard, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Alice Paul, Dorothy Day, Amelia Bloomer and Jeannette Rankin.Some quotes from some strong suffragettes would be; Susan B. Anthony:’The older I get, the greater power I seem to have to help the world. I am like a snowball – the further I am rolled the more I gain.” and “Failure is impossible”. Alice Paul: When you put your hand to the plow, you can’t put it down until you get to the end of the row”. Lucy Stone: ‘We, the people of the United States.’ Which ‘We, the people’? The women were not included. Lucretia Mott: ‘The world has never yet seen a truly great and virtuous nation because in the degradation of woman the very fountains of life are poisoned at their source.’
There is a very strong argument for the women to be able to vote. Women deserve the right just as much as any other man does. We have very strong opinions, that need to be used in the society. It is only fair that women get to vote, if men get to.Women were very capable of politics, and still are. Other countries were giving women the vote, ex. New Zealand. It would be democratic to give women the right to vote. Some uneducated working men could vote but well-educated ,respectable, women could not. This was very unfair. Women who were taxpayers should have the right to vote for everything that a man should.
There is also a strong argument for the women not to be able to vote. Women’s brains were smaller than a man’s brain. Therefore they wouldn’t make the correct decisions in voting, or they would not understand. Women were all represented by their husbands. Women did not fight wars, so why should they be able to vote? There were many more important social issues for women to fight for. Women were child bearers and that would stop them from taking part in political life and if they did take part they would stop having children and that would be a threat to the whole human race. They need to stick to what they know best, motherhood.
Society will change because us women can vote and get a job or better jobs.As a young women my voice will be heard unlike the women from the past. It is very important for me to be able to vote, because my voice will be heard in our country, our state, and our home. If we do not get the vote, then the men of the world control everything, and we control nothing, except the children, women deserve to vote just as much as any man should, everyone should be treated equally. Male, Female, African, Caucasian, or Mexican, we are all the same underneath it all.
