Chapters 1 and 2: Summary: In the beginning of the book, we are introduced to the eight strangers who were invited to the mysterious island named “Soldier Island” by an unknown host name U. N. Owen. The eight were Mr. Justice Wargrave, Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, Emily Brent, General Macarthur, Edward Armstrong, Tony Marston and William Blore. Justice Wargrave is a retired judge who was invited into Soldier Island by a woman named Constance Culmington. Vera Claythorne is a skilled secretary who was hired by Mr. Owen to be his own secretary in Soldier Island. Philip Lombard was also another soldier and was invited by Mr.

Owen because of his reputation is that of a good man in a tight place. Emily Brent was a sixty-five year old woman who regularly reads and follows her Bible. She was a friend of Mr. Owen and was invited to his “guest house” in the island. Gen. Macarthur was a War hero. He was invited by Owen to reminisce the old times that they have been together. Edward Armstrong is a doctor invited by Mr. Owen. Anthony James “Tony” Marston is a rich, good-looking man. Lastly, Mr. Blore is a retired police inspector which Owen invited. When they came to the mansion they met two other people, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, who were the cook and butler for their stay and was hired by Mr. Owen. After they all met they realized hat the person who invited them, Mr. Owen, was not present. Almost everybody became suspicious of this and wanted to see him as soon as possible. The chapter ended when the guests are preparing for dinner. Quotations and Explanations: 1. “…I shall be glad to pay you the salary you ask and shall expect you to take up your duties on August 8th. The train is the 12. 40 from Paddington and you will be met at Oakbridge station.

I enclose five guineas for expenses. ”(3-4). This direct quote explains to us the setting of the next scene and also tells us about Vera’s role on why Mr. Owen invited him. 2. “Vera went over to the window and sat down on the window seat. She was faintly disturbed Everything-somehow-was a little queer. The absence of the Owens, the pale ghostlike Mrs. Rogers. And the guests! Yes the guests were queer too. An oddly assorted party. ” (32-33). This shows the first rising action of the story; Vera has suddenly become suspicious of the Owens’ disappearance, the guests’ actions and of them being isolated in an island. . “Mr. Justice Wargrave reflected on the subject of Constance Culmington. Undependable like all women. His mind went on to the two women in the two women in thee house, the tight-lipped old maid and the girl. He didn’t care for the girl, cold-blooded young hussy. No, three women if you counted the Rogers woman. Odd creature, she looked scared to death. ”(38). This narration first introduces us to Mr. Wargrave. It tells us that Justice Wargrave is a person who only cares for himself and is not caring to other people. 4. ”Damn it all, the whole thing was deuced odd!

Not at all what he’d been led to expect……. But the motorboat had gone back to the main land. He’d have to stay. ”(40) This shows us that Gen. Macarthur finally realized that he has been fooled to go to Soldier Island. The promise of meeting his comrades in the island were false. Chapters 3 and 4: Summary: After the guests were able to adapt themselves to the mansion, they had dinners which were served by the Rogers. After eating, the two ladies, Vera and Emily, left out into the drawing room. Immediately afterward, the rest of the guests followed.

While they are having their conversations, they heard a loud voice coming out of nowhere and warned them. The voice told them that each and every one of them were guilty of killing people. One by one, the voice told them their accusations. After the accusations, the voice said to them “Prisoners at the bar, have you anything to say in your defense? ” and immediately stopped. They were shocked and were wondering were the voice was coming from. They called in the Rogers and were told that they don’t know where it is hidden. They soon found out that it was coming from the gramophone. Mrs.

Rogers fainted during their search and Mr. Rogers told them that he received a letter from Mr. Owen telling him to put the disc on the gramophone and immediately play it after dinner. Justice Marshall soon grew suspicion on who U. N. Owen really is. Each of the guests told Marshall the reason they where here. Emily Brent said that she doesn’t even know U. N. Owen and thought the signature was from his friend with the name Oliver. Everybody soon told Justice why they were in the island. Finally, Marshall came up with a hypothesis; they were invited by an unknown, dangerous, homicidal lunatic.

Marshall asked each and every one of them about what their connection with the person they were accused of murdering. Justice told them that he sentenced the person accused to him to death because of his charges. Vera told them that she was too late to rescue the kid she was swimming with. Macarthur said he sent out Richmond, person accused to him, to a reconnaissance in which he died. Dr. Armstrong remembered a patient he killed because of operating while drunk but refused to tell them. Lombard said he left some of his to die in a mission. The Rogers were taking care of the woman who died.

Marston said he killed somebody accidentally due to speeding. Lastly, Blore told them he killed a guy who robbed a bank. Emily Brent remained silent and told them she was innocent. After all the trouble that has happened they made up a plan of leaving the mansion in the morning when Narracott’s boat comes. When Marston decided to drink, he took his glass and gulped it whole and immediately fell down and died. Quotations and Explanations: 1. “Emily Brent said: “Mrs. Oliver has been lucky to get these two. The woman’s a good cook. ” Vera thought: “Funny how elderly people always get last names wrong. She said: Yes, I think Mrs. Owen has been very lucky indeed. ” Emily Brent had brought a small piece of embroidery out of her bag. Now, as she was about to thread her needle, she paused. She said sharply: “Owen? Did you say Owen? ” “Yes. ” Emily Brent said sharply: “I’ve never met anyone called Owen in my life. ”(45) The quotation tells us that Emily Brent didn’t come to island because she knows the man initialed “U. N. O. ” on her letter. She was fooled by Owen that he was a friend of Emily in order to make her go to the mansion. 2. “….. Amongst the names recited was that of William Henry Blore.

But as far as we know there is no one named Blore amongst us. The name Davis was not mentioned. What have you to say about that, Mr. Davis? ”(60) This quotation tells us that when Mr. Blore joined the guests on the Island, he disguised himself as Mr. Davis. We also learned that he was hired as a detective agent by Owen. 3. “Did you know Seton at all? I mean previous to the case. ” The hooded reptilian eyes met his. In a clear cold voice the judge said: “I knew nothing of Seton previous to the case. ” Armstrong said to himself: “The fellow’s lying—I know he’s lying. (66) This quotation gives some detail about the conflict between the judge and Dr. Armstrong. For some reason, Armstrong doesn’t trust the judge’s response to him saying that he doesn’t know Seton. This creates a conflict of Armstrong not trusting Marshall. 4. “Drunk—that’s what it was—drunk…And I operated! Nerves all to pieces—hands shaking. I killed her all right. Poor devil—elderly woman—simple job if I’d been sober. Lucky for me there’s loyalty in our profession. The sister knew, of course—but she held her tongue. God, it gave me a shock! Pulled me up.

But who could have known about it—after all these years? ”(72) This quote from the book tells us two things. It tells us that Armstrong did kill someone while he was drunk. This made Armstrong guilty of the woman’s death. Second, is that we now know that Mr. Owen had it all planned to scout their illegal or bad actions in order to frighten or horrify them. Chapters 5 and 6: Summary: The guests were surprised at Marston’s sudden death. They were just drinking together and suddenly he died. Dr. Armstrong suggested that Marston might have accidentally drunk potassium cyanide, which caused him to asphyxiate.

They were suggesting that it was suicide, because they searched at the table where the drinks are and found no poisonous substance. However, Mr. Blore and Armstrong believed that Marston was not the type of person who would kill himself. After they have placed Marston to his bed, they soon went to each other’s room locking their doors without any conscious thought. While in bed most of the guest remembered their past. Wargrave remembered the court case where he sentenced Seton to death. Gen. Macarthur remembered the time when he was with Richmond and when he sent him to his death.

Vera remembered the time where Cyril drowned, and he remembered Hugo, her lover. Dr. Armstrong dreamt of the operation, where he was operating Emily Brent. Armstrong was soon awakened by Rogers, who told him that he could not wake up his wife. Armstrong came down from his room and saw Mrs. Rogers on the bed. He tried to wake her up but she wouldn’t, so he told Mr. Rogers that his wife is dead. He asked Rogers what she had before sleeping. Rogers told him that she didn’t eat anything except for the brandy Armstrong told her to drink. After eating, Armstrong told to the other guests what happened to Mrs.

Rogers. Emily Brent said it was an act of God which killed her, but most of them believed that. When it was ten in the morning, the male guests were already thinking that the boat will not come. Macarthur said that the whole plan of Owen was to trap or isolate them in the island. After fixing the table, Rogers told Armstrong about the china figures. He said that at the beginning, there were ten. The night after Marston died, there were nine and when his wife died the number of china figures was now eight. After he had said this Armstrong was surprised and confused. Quotations and explanations: 1. They exchanged good-nights on the upper landing. Each of them went into his or her room, and each of them automatically, almost without conscious thought, locked the door….. ”(79) This shows us that after one of them died, none of them believed that it was an accident that Marston died. They are positive that there is a killer, which they think could be Owen or one of them. 2. “I can’t ask you to marry me. I’ve not got a penny. It’s all I can do to keep myself. Queer, you know, once for three months I had the chance of being a rich man to look forward to. Cyril wasn’t born until three months after Maurice died.

If he’d been a girl….. ” If the child had been a girl, Hugo would have come into everything. ”(87-88) This quotation introduces us to Hugo who is Vera’s lover. It tells us that Cyril and Hugo are relatives to Maurice. When Maurice died, he had a chance of inheriting Maurice’s money but three months later Cyril was born. He said that if only Cyril was a girl, he would have inherited the money and with that money, he would be able to marry Vera. 3. “She didn’t have nothing last, sir, except what you gave her. ”(94) This tells us that the brandy that Armstrong gave her was a poison that killed her.

It also shows us that whoever this killer is, he planned the death of Mrs. Rogers by replacing the brandy by a poison. 4. “There’s only eight, sir! Only eight! It doesn’t make sense, does it? Only eight…” (106) This quote gives us something to think about. It is whether the killer is living in the mansion with because suddenly the little soldier figures are missing, one by one and that the deaths so far are following the nursery rhyme “Ten little soldier boys…. ” Chapters 7 and 8: Summary: After the remaining guest finished eating breakfast, Vera and Emily went out to have a walk to the summit to wait for the boat.

Emily told her about the woman accused to her. She told Vera that she doesn’t feel guilty of the woman dying because she felt she deserved to die because she’s a wild girl. The girl was in service to Emily Brent, but Emily did not view her in a pleasant way. After she had told this to Vera, Vera soon became terrified of Ms. Brent. Meanwhile, Armstrong came out and called Lombard and asked him about what he thinks is happening in the island. Lombard said to Armstrong that he thinks Marston and Mrs. Rogers were murdered. He also said that the murderer might be hiding in the island.

So Armstrong, Lombard and Blore went out and searched around the island to look for a possible hiding place for the murderer. After a few hours, they looked around the whole island, but found no one except Macarthur, who was sitting on the shore. They asked him what he was doing there but Macarthur just said that he would wait there for the end. The three soon left him alone and continued searching the island. They soon went to the landing area, finding no place that could be used to hide. They heard a loud noise on the room Mrs. Rogers was laid and though that the killer was there. They went up and barged in but found Mr.

Rogers inside, taking his stuff away from the room. Rogers told them that he would just move his stuff into the smallest room. Without thinking, they went out and let Rogers do what he was doing. A thought entered their mind, the thought that they were just alone in the island. Quotations and explanations: 1. “Vera said: “But if your—hardness—drove her to it. ” Emily Brent said sharply: “Her own action—her own sin—that was what drove her to it. ” (111) This dialogue from the book gives us a deeper explanation of Emily Brent’s character and attitude. It tells us the Emily Brent is a rude, selfish and only thinks of herself.

She uses the teachings of the Bible as an excuse for doing bad actions, such as being condemnatory to Beatrice the servant, and Mrs. Rogers 2. “Well, I mean like this. After the racket last night this young Marston gets the wind up and poisons himself. And Rogers, he gets the wind up too and bumps off his wife. All according to U. N. O’s plan. ” (121) This quotation tells us that Blore figured out that there is a menace causing all the problems for the guests and he thinks the whole thing is according to U. N. O’s plan. 3. “None of us are going to leave the island. That the plan. You know it, of course, perfectly.

What perhaps, you can’t understand is the relief” (129) This quotation is important because this shows us that Macarthur feels that his end is coming. He feels alone because Leslie died and his deep secret was revealed. Because they were stranded in the island, he thinks his life has no use anymore, and that his end is coming. 4. “There are habits and habits! Mr. Lombard takes a revolver to out of the way places, right enough, and a primus and a sleeping bag and a supply of bug powder no doubt! But habit wouldn’t make him bring the whole outfit down here! It’s only in books people carry revolvers around as a matter of course. (133) This quotation shows us that if Blore had to point a killer from the seven other guests, he would think Lombard would be the mastermind of all the things that happened. This is because of Lombard’s strange habit of carrying a revolver with him every time. Chapters 9 and 10: Summary: The chapter started with the remaining guests preparing to eat lunch. When they were assembling to dining table, they noticed Gen. Macarthur was missing. Dr. Armstrong volunteered to go look for him. After a minute or two, they heard loud footsteps. Dr. Armstrong went in and informed them that he found Gen.

Macarthur dead on the shore. They placed his corpse on his bed, and assembled in the drawing room. Like before, Justice Wargrave lead the discussion. They discussed how Macarthur died; they figured out that he died because he was hit on the head. Suddenly, the judge made a big conclusion. He told them that Mr. Owen is not hiding in the island, but is one of them. They discussed all the three deaths, and told each other their alibis during the time of murder. Afterwards, they tried removing some of them in the chance of being the murderer but it nobody had enough facts to support their ideas.

By the end of the discussion, they soon walked away trying to do something to amuse themselves. Vera and Lombard had a conversation about who they think is the murderer. Vera thinks Armstrong is the murderer because the first two cases were related to poisoning and for the latest one, he had a chance to kill Macarthur when he left out to look for him. Lombard told her that he thinks Wargrave is the murderer. During this time, Blore was explaining to Rogers what the discussion was about. Rogers told Blore that he is afraid of the fact that he doesn’t know who the murderer is.

When it was nine in the evening, they decided to go back to the room. They locked their doors and went to bed. Rogers, who was cleaning up the table, saw that there were only seven figurines. He came up his room, saying to himself, “no more china-soldier tricks tonight. ” Quotations and Explanations 1. “Yes. I believe now that I’m in the same boat as the rest of you. The hundred guineas was just Mr. Owen’s little bit of cheese to get me into the trap along with the rest of you. ” (143) This quotation tells us that previous to this moment, Lombard believed that he was just hired by Owen to spy the guests.

But now that they are stranded on the island and that one by one they begin to die, he believes he is now on the same boat as they are. 2. “No question of heart failure or anything like that. Macarthur was hit with a life preserver or some such thing on the back of the head. ” (148) The fact that Macarthur died because of hit on the head proves their theory of a killer with them was right. They no longer think that it was an accident but know they are clear that a killer is with them. 3. “In shaking loose capitals she wrote: “THE MURDERER’S NAME IS BEATRICE TAYLOR…. ” Her eyes closed. Suddenly with a start she awoke.

She looked down at the notebook. With an angry exclamation she scored through the vague unevenly scrawled characters of the last sentence. She said in a low voice: “Did I write that? Did I? I must be going mad…….. ”(175) This quotation reveals to us that all the events that happened in the island had been affecting Emily Brent, who was the only one from the guests who was quiet and lonely. She is slowly becoming mad because of when the judge accused him of killing Mrs. Rogers. She tried to tell them that Mrs. Rogers’s death was an act of God and she was blaming the whole scenario to Beatrice Taylor, who was already dead. 4. Crossing the room he locked the door to the pantry. Then going through the other door to the hall he pulled the door to, locked it and slipped the key into his pocket. Then, extinguishing the lights, he hurried up the stairs into his new bedroom. There was only one possible hiding placed in it, the tall wardrobe, and he looked into that immediately. ”(179) Since there were already four deaths in the island, Rogers tried to stop the murderer from getting to the pantry. He thinks that before every kill he does, he removes a soldier figure. This may mean that he is trying to know if one of them is the killer or that it is somebody else.

It also makes him sure that there is only one possible hiding place, the wardrobe. So that in case somebody attempts to kill him, the killer would be trapped because he locked all the doors. Chapters 11 and 12: Summary: Since they stayed at the mansion, most of the guests wake up by Rogers’s wake-up call. Lombard, who woke up early, noticed that at nine-thirty that no one was awake. He got up, thinking that something has surely gone wrong. He knocked at Blore’s door and asked him if anybody called him or brought tea. Blore noticed the clock, he also noticed the how late it is.

They came up with the idea that Rogers was missing, or even worse dead. He knocked on the guests’ doors and found them awake and dressed except for Ms. Brent’s room, where nobody was responding. When hey came down, they found her coming in through the front door with a mackintosh. They asked her about Rogers’s absence. She told them that she didn’t see him. They saw the table was prepared but saw one thing different, they only saw six china figures. After a few minutes, they found Rogers dead in the little washhouse. They found a deep wound in the back of Roger’s head. This made them think for sure that t was murder which caused the deaths. A sudden laugh was heard, it was from Vera, and she was saying “Do you think they keep bees on this island. ” She said that the next murder will be by a sting of a bee, as it was written on the rhyme. Armstrong strode toward her and hit her with a flat blow on the cheek, which silenced her. Blore and Lombard were talking to each other, suspecting Emily Brent to have killed Rogers. They said that if Mrs. Brent was innocent, he would be too dead scared to walk alone. He would be too dead scared to walk alone. When they were eating lunch, they were somewhat very polite to one another.

After the meal, everyone except Mrs. Brent went to help Vera carry the things to the kitchen. When Mrs. Brent was on the dining room, she was a bit giddy, but the dizziness was fading out. She noticed a bee on the window and remembered Vera talking about bees. She knew there was somebody on the room, but she couldn’t call out or even turn her head to see who it was. And sooner than later, she was stung by an injection. When they came out, she saw her dead. Armstrong told them that cyanide was injected to her by a hypodermic syringe. The judge asked Armstrong if he had a hypodermic syringe with him.

The doctor said that he did bring one, and it was up on his room. When they couldn’t find it, Armstrong told them that someone took it. On the other hand, they also questioned Lombard about his revolver. When they went to his room, they also couldn’t find hi revolver, which troubled them. They went outside the house and found near the window, a syringe and a smashed china figure. This made them think that one of them killed her, and took one china figure with him just to follow on with the rhyme. Quotations and Explanations: 1. “You’re missing the point, Mr. Lombard.

If the woman was innocent she’d be too dead scared to go wandering around by herself. She’d only do that if she knew she has nothing to fear. ” (189) This quotation makes us think that Emily Brent is the killer. Blore thinks she is the killer because she wouldn’t go out alone unless she doesn’t have anything to fear, unlesss she herself is the murderer. 2. “She heard footsteps—soft dragging footsteps coming up behind her. The stumbling footsteps of a drowned girl… there was a wet dank smell in her nostrils….. On the windowpane the bee was buzzing—buzzing… And then she felt the prick.

The bee sting on the side of her neck. ” (199) This quotation tells us that somebody had come near Emily Brent in order to kill her. The killer used the time when she was faint and dizzy to go in for the kill. The killer also released a bee outside just to follow the rhyme of the poem. 3. “We have still, I hope, our reasoning powers. Did any one bring a hypodermic syringe to this house? ” Dr. Armstrong, straightening himself, said in a voice that was not to well assured: “Yes, I did. ” (203) This quotation tells us that the other guests now suspect Armstrong to be the killer because he brought a syringe.

It will be mainly because Armstrong is the only one who brought a syringe and that nobody from the rest would even have any poisonous medicines that could have killed Mrs. Brent. 4. “A little distance away from the dining room window he found the syringe. Beside it was a smashed china figure—a sixth broken soldier boy. ” (210) This tells us that the killer murdered Mrs. Brent and threw away the china figure. This makes us think that Armstrong killed Emily Brent, and then threw away the syringe and smashed the soldier boy figure in order for the blame to not go to him.

This quote is supported by the absence of the syringe Armstrong brought in the mansion. Chapters 13 and 14: Summary: After minutes of searching the revolver, they all sat down in the drawing room. Most of them had their senses heightened because as one by one they begin to die, the knowledge on which of them is the killer gets even closer. After dinner they went back to the drawing room thinking about who they think the killer is. It was getting dark, so they took some candles for light. At twenty past six, Vera wanted to go upstairs. She went upstairs and lighted the candle.

The breeze from outside suddenly flickered out the flame. She felt somebody inside. As she stood there, a broad ribbon of wet seaweed was placed on her neck. She thought it was somebody trying to kill her. The guests downstairs heard her scream and immediately went up. They found her lying on the ground, with the ribbon of seaweed on her neck. They offered her something to drink, but she would only drink it if it was from an unopened bottle. After Vera was well again, they noticed that the judge wasn’t with them. They went down look for him. They found him dead on his chair, with him wearing a scarlet robe and a judge’s wig.

Two candles were placed next to him. Armstrong went next to him and lifted the wig. He found a round strained mark on the back of his head which was trickled. Armstrong told them that he was shot and was dead instantaneously. They figured out that the wig was Emily Brent’ missing wool and the robe was the missing curtain in the bathroom. They wondered why there was no sound of gunfire. They believe it is because of the noises upstairs which made them not notice. They went to the kitchen and had something to eat. All of them are positive on who they think the killer is.

They went up into their bedrooms trying to go to sleep. Mr. Blore, who wasn’t sleepy, heard a noise outside his door. Noiselessly, he went to the door to listen. He came out and saw a man come out of the front door. He soon knocked on everybody’s doors. Vera and Lombard responded, but not Armstrong. Blore and Lombard soon went out to look for Armstrong and told Vera not to open the door unless both of them return. After a few hours of searching, Blore and Lombard came back empty-handed for they couldn’t find Armstrong. When they came down, they only found three soldier boys on the table.

Quotations and Explanations: 1. “She saw what it was the men with the candles were looking at. A broad ribbon of wet seaweed was hanging down from the ceiling. It was that which in darkness had swayed against her throat. ” (218) This quotation tells us that whoever planned to scare Vera hysterically attempted to hang a ribbon of wet seaweed on the ceiling. It tells us that the person who did it knew of Vera’s past. 2. “She said, and her voice shook with horror: “Miss Brent’s missing grey wool…. ” Blore said: “And the scarlet curtain that was missing from the bathroom…. ” (223)

This quotation tells us that the killer planned to use the missing wool and the scarlet curtain in order to make it go with the rhyme. The rhyme said “Five little soldier boys going in for law, one got in Chancery and then there were four. ” 3. “His sudden wolf-like smile flashed out. He undressed quickly. He went over to the bed, placing his wristwatch on the table by the bed. Then he stood there, staring down at the revolver that was inside it…. ” (228) This quotation tells us either Lombard was just hiding his gun in order to remove suspicion from him or that the killer who used it on Wargrave returned it to give Lombard the blame. . “She opened the door. He two men were breathing hard, their feet and the bottom of heir trousers were soaking wet. She said a again: “What’s happened? ” Lombard said: “Armstrong’s disappeared… ” (241) The fact that they couldn’t find Armstrong makes us think if he is hiding because he knows most of them think he is the killer. It could also be because he committed suicide or was lured by the murderer and killed him. Chapters 15 and 16: Summary: After breakfast, they decided to try heliographing with a mirror to call for SOS. They went on into the cliffs and discussed where Armstrong might be.

Even though they think the killer’s gone, Blore still insists Lombard to put his revolver in the locked items. However, Lombard declined Blore’s request. When Blore was hungry he decided to go back to the mansion while Lombard and Vera remained in the cliff. A few minutes later, they heard a noise coming from the mansion. When they came inside, they found Blore’s body on the floor, his head crushed and mangled by a great block of white marble. After knowing that it was the bear shaped clock on Vera’s room that was dropped over Blore, they knew somebody was on the island.

They soon decided to finally look for Armstrong. When they were pacing across the shore, they found clothes. When they went up close, they found a man, with a hideous drowned face, it was Armstrong. When they found his body, Vera insisted that they move his body out of the reach of the water. When they have done this, Lombard noticed his revolver wasn’t on his pocket. His revolver was stolen by Vera, while he was distracted on Armstrong. When Vera decided to aim it to him, Lombard strode forward, and Vera pressed the trigger to kill Lombard.

When she decided to go back inside the mansion, she found the china figures untouched, with three remaining. She took out the two and threw them out of the terrace. She took the last one with her, saying that they won. She wondered what the verse is for the last soldier boy. She went up into her room and saw a rope with a noose hanging on the hook and a chair underneath it. She remembered the riddle, and thought that was what Hugo wanted him to do. So she placed the rope on her neck and kicked away the chair. Quotations and Explanations: 1. “It’s mine—and that’s the clock from my mantelpiece… I remember now.

It was shaped like a bear. ” (255) The fact that the clock was from Vera’s room makes us think that somebody is alive aside from them and is hiding in the mansion. 2. “Lombard and Vera reached it in a last scramble. They bent down. A purple discolored face—a hideous drowned face… Lombard said: “My God! It’s Armstrong…” (259) This quote makes us think that Armstrong either committed suicide or was pushed into the sea. It also makes us think that Blore’s death was now caused by another person aside from them two. 3. “he clapped his hand to his pocket he knew that he would find it empty.

She had moved a yard or two away and was facing him, revolver at hand. ” (264) This quote tells us that Vera wasn’t trusting Lombard. She thought Lombard was the killer because of his revolver and was just waiting for Blore to be gone in order for Lombard to kill her. 4. “A rope with a noose all ready? And a chair to stand upon—a chair that could be kicked away…. That was what Hugo wanted……” (268) This quote tells us that all the deaths have affected Vera’s thinking. She was even happy about the fact that she was now alone and when he killed Lombard. She’s also haunted by her dark memory of hers.

She thinks that Hugo wanted him commit suicide so that they will be together. Epilogue: Summary: Sir Thomas Legge and Inspector Maine were investigating about the case of the gusts. They were astounded when they found ten people dead on the island with no one alive. They were discussing about how the guests died in the island. They said that the man who made the arrangements for the island was a man named Isaac Morris, but the man was dead. Morris represented himself as Mr. Owen and told the people at Sticklehaven that there was an experiment and that no notice must be taken of any appeal for help.

When Blore, Vera and Lombard made the SOS signals, a few boy scouts saw it in the morning. Since it was impossible to sail out that day, the men got there for the rescue the next day. When they came to the island, they found the gramophone record. They were able to investigate the accusations. They heard that Morris died because of an overdose on sleeping stuff. They were wondering if Morris was on the island because no one could have sailed back. When they were talking about Vera’s suicide story, they wondered about the chair. The chair was neatly put back against the wall and doesn’t look like it was kicked.

This made them think that someone was alive after Vera killed herself. But one question went on their minds. It was about who killed them. The epilogue was followed by a manuscript that was written by Wargrave. In it he admitted to be the main killer. He placed cyanide on Marston’s drink, placed lethal amounts of chlorate on the brandy Armstrong gave to Mrs. Rogers, hit Macarthur in the head, killed Ms. Brent with the syringe, pushed Armstrong off the cliff and dropped the bear over Blore. He and Armstrong made an alliance. He faked his own death by making Armstrong put a plaster of red mud on his forehead.

He told Armstrong the night after that that they would have a meeting outside, near the cliff. This gave him an opportunity to push him to the sea. When Blore came by inside the mansion, he found an opportunity to drop the bear clock while Blore was busy looking at the shore. Lastly, it was his psychological experiment on Vera. She did both of what Wargrave planned, killing Lombard and committing suicide. He said that he killed Isaac Morris by giving him sleeping stuff that was lethal, making him his first victim. He said since he was young, he fancied all the things about murder.

He finally decided to make a murder himself, a murder of extreme proportions. When everybody died, he arranged a method of him laying down on his bed with the revolver aimed at him. He wants to die but doesn’t want the police or detectives to think that he was the killer. He wanted to make a case that could not be solved. And there fore he wrote the solution to this case, his revelation, and threw it out into the sea, hoping someone might find it. Quotations and Explanations: 1. “It was Morris who made all the arrangements down at Sticklehaven. Represented himself as acting for ‘Mr. Owen. And it was he who explained to the people down there that there was some experiment on” (273) This quotation finally tells us who Mr. Owen is. It also tells us why no boats were arriving at the island. He told the people of Sticklehaven that there was an experiment going on at Soldier Island. 2. “But that chair wasn’t found kicked over. It was, like all other chairs, neatly put back against the wall. That was done after Vera Claythorne’s death—by someone else. ” (283) This quote tells us that someone was on the island after Vera’s death. It means that since Morris died earlier, another person was in there at that time. 3. It was my ambition to invent a murder mystery that no one could solve. ” (298) This quote tells us that the only reason Wargrave planned this is because he wanted to make a huge mystery because of his love of death. Just to please his love of justice, he decided to pick people whose actions were not punished by the law. 4. “And they will find ten dead bodies and an unsolved problem on soldier island. Signed: Lawrence Wargrave. ” (300) This quote finally tells us who the killer is. Wargrave himself admitted on his manuscript that he had planned for this just because he wanted to make a murder mystery that could not be solved.
