It stops you from focusing on things or people that are important to you. Being focused on your own selfish motives can cause you to lose all your morals and principles. Walter Lee was so concern about being rich he could not focus on anything but making a deal to open a Liquor Store. He Is not thinking about why and how his mother Inherited 10,000 dollars. He only knew that It loud help him get his liquor Store.
Walter was not even concern with how his business partners Willie and Bob was going to get their money. During this time after World War two this amount of money was hard to get, for poor black people In Chicago. Willie and Bob must have been around when Walter first started talking betray both of them and Bob Is working with Willie he thinks to betray Walter. Once again treachery is going to cause friends to betray each other. Walter gets mad when his mother tells him that she went out and bought her family a new home. He feels like his mother is selfish and not concern with what he wants.
His mother feels bad and asks Walter to take charge of the 6500 dollars that is left after she put a down payment on a new home. His mother asks him to take the money to the bank and set some aside for Beneath college education. Walter does not do anything his mother asks him to do, but he betrays her trust. He runs off to find his friends to give them the money to make the Liquor Store deal. When Walter takes the money to his friends the evil that’s in all betrayals are about to take over. Evil has no morals or values to monitor or measures its actions.
If Walter’s friends were really his friends they would not be plotting to get his money. Bob did not tell Walter the right amount of money that he was really contributing to the Liquor Store project. Little does Bob knows that their friend Willie is going to betray him and Walter. Betrayal has no friends, just as Willie is not a friend of Walter or Bob. The plan has been set, Willie and Bob are going to meet at the train station and go to Springfield to spread some money around to help get the Liquor License. When Bob gets to the Train Station Willie is nowhere to be found.
Now Bob has to go tell Walter and his family how they have been betrayed. Also Bob tells Walter that he did not tell the truth about the amount of money that he contributed to the Liquor Store Project. Walter betrayed his family and his friends betrayed him. I conclude that betrayals undermine people, relationships, Institutions everything. Humanity depends upon people depending upon each other for their word, honesty and loyalty.
