Effects of Computer Games in Education Research Paper

Table of Content

Computer games are extremely popular in today’s society and have both positive and negative effects on teenagers. Parents may notice that their teenagers spend a lot of time playing computer games, but they may not understand why they are so enthusiastic about them or the negative consequences associated with excessive gaming. There are two main reasons why teenagers become excessively involved in computer games, and these also lead to two important outcomes. The first reason is the pure enjoyment that comes from playing these games, as they are primarily designed to relieve stress.

Computer games often receive criticism for their excessive violent content and its potential influence on behavior. The issue of how violent content impacts behavior has been extensively discussed in “Mind and Media.” Barrie Gunter’s study, “The effects of video games on children,” suggests that playing computer or video games with violent themes can amplify perceptions of risk and danger in real life. Furthermore, Gunter contends that these games are influential because they give young players a sense of control. As a result, computer games may inadvertently contribute to a rise in teenage violence as players may mistakenly identify with the characters portrayed in these games.

Computer addiction, also known as Internet addiction disorder (IAD), refers to a person’s dependence on their computer, which includes personal computers (PCs), video games, and the Internet. Psychologists classify IAD as an addiction similar to alcoholism, drug dependency, and sex addiction. It has recently been recognized that activities like exercise, watching television, or excessive computer use can also be addictive. Like other addictions, computer addiction can develop without the individual being aware of it. There are many resources available for treating different types of addictions, including computer addiction. Some talk shows often feature individuals whose relationships have suffered greatly due to one partner’s intense preoccupation with their computer.

Funk (1993) states that spending too much time on activities like online chatting, web surfing, or computer gaming can lead to relationship decline by neglecting other aspects of life. Research has examined adolescents’ computer game playing habits and found that males tend to play more often than females (Kaplan, 1983). Morlock, Nigolean, and Yanto (1985) conducted a study revealing that this disparity can be attributed to the game content, which usually includes more masculine characters compared to feminine ones.
