Initially, my expectations for this class were low. I thought it would be boring and uninteresting, with a focus solely on passing and meeting graduation requirements. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself captivated by the creativity of most artists. In the past, I didn’t appreciate or understand art, but now I feel disappointed in my previous mindset. My understanding has grown as I’ve come to value the emotional depth and expression conveyed in their work. Now, whenever possible, I prioritize visiting museums to admire the diverse pieces they display. This class has revealed unexpected connections between art and different aspects of history and psychology. Despite not actively participating in discussions or topics, this course has truly enlightened me about the true significance of art – proving that a painting or sculpture goes beyond surface-level perceptions.

David Garibaldi, an unrecognized young artist, caught my attention with his captivating work. Despite the abundance of famous artists today, his art stood out to me. It is possible that he and his artwork are unfamiliar to many people. Personally, I only discovered him when he appeared on America’s Got Talent during the 2012 season. What sets him apart is his distinctive style that combines visual and performing art. I was astonished by how rapidly he could finish a piece while still mesmerizing the audience. I was mesmerized when I watched the YouTube video of this artwork being created. The speed at which it was painted and the technique used to initially obscure the portrait amazed me. However, when the canvas was flipped, the true beauty and meaning of the painting were revealed. The colors used in this artwork evoked a range of emotions. The purple, blue, white, and green around Christ’s face and neckline seemed to convey the pain and suffering he endured in order to fulfill God’s will and sacrifice himself for humanity. The black areas around the eyes, frown, and tilted head portrayed sadness or prayer, as if his eyes were closed. The crown of thorns on Christ’s head, with hints of red symbolizing blood, sweat, and tears, depicted his selfless act and willingness to suffer for others. The position in which Garibaldi painted Christ reveals the artist’s passionate desire to capture a more intimate representation. The use of different colors on the canvases and the influence of music further enhance Garibaldi’s unique style and attention to detail in each brushstroke.
