I awoke to the ringing of the phone. I rubbed my eyes and rolled out of bed. When my eyes cleared up enough to where I could see: I noticed it was still dark outside. I picked up the phone and tried to clear my voice so I could be heard. Once I answered I could hear that the voice on the phone was my eldest brother. He said, “Erica is having the baby! ” As soon as the words sunk into my sleepy head, I was fully awake and filled with excitement. I ran to my mom’s room and woke her up to tell her the great news.
I wanted to go to the hospital to see my new niece or nephew but town was forty-five minutes away from my house. So I tried to go back to bed and wait till morning. Morning couldn’t come soon enough. My family woke up and was ready to head to town to go meet the new beautiful member of the family. The ride to town felt more like two hours rather than forty-five minutes. I watched the trees and bushes zip by as I peered out the window. The moment that I had been waiting for, for nine months had finally come.
As we pulled into my brother’s driveway I couldn’t get out of the car fast enough. I couldn’t wait to be an auntie. I walked into my brother’s house to find that the only people there were more of my siblings. They said that my brother and Erica were on their way home from the hospital right now. As I sat down on the wooden rocking chair covered with a scratchy wool blanket, all I could think about was how my niece or nephew would look. I was extremely tired from not sleeping very well the night before that I slowly drifted to sleep in the chair.
I woke up to the creaking sound of the door. I looked up and saw my brother carrying a car seat with a pink blanket draping down over the side. At that moment I knew it was a baby girl. My brother’s eyes twinkled with joy and he couldn’t stop smiling. My brother took her out of the seat and came into the living room to let us see her. He sat down on the couch and held her out on his legs so we could all have a good view. As I walked over to the couch I could see a little head with not very much hair. When I sat down on the couch beside my brother I just stared at the baby.
She was so cute, her little eyes were closed and she had these tiny eyelashes that looked just perfect. Her nose was so petite it was like a little button; her cheeks had a dash of pink on them like a plum fresh off the tree. She had her lips puckered up and they were red and had a lot of shape to them. I drew my face close to hers to give her a kiss on the head. She smelled so good and fresh. I couldn’t help but smile, tears ran down my face uncontrollably. I was so excited to have this little person in my life.
At that moment, nobody else mattered it was like all of my focus was on her and everyone else in the room was blocked out. As I stared at her beautiful little face, I felt an enormous amount of love. Even though I didn’t even know her, I instantly loved her. Moments later, I stopped zoning out and I could hear everyone laughing and talking. As I looked around the room, everyone’s faces were filled with joy. It was a room full of happiness and excitement. My brother looked over at me and said, “Her name is Addison. ” Addison just fit her perfectly.
At that moment I didn’t know if I could ever be happier in life. From that day on I just knew my life would be so much better with her in it. Every day Addison grew so much, every time I saw her I felt like she was just bigger and bigger. Time was just flying by so fast. Before I knew it I was getting an invitation to her first birthday party. After that, in a blink of an eye was her second birthday. Now I look around and see Addison as this big three-year-old girl with long blond hair, bright blue eyes, long legs and beautiful smile of happiness.
Looking back now, I can’t even remember my life without her. Addison grew so fast it was crazy. One moment she was a baby and the next she’s a kid, talking, walking, running around like crazy everyday. She is so grown up and it’s weird to think that she was just a little baby only three years ago. When I first met Addison I was so grateful for her; I just wanted to thank my brother and Erica a million times. It’s an odd feeling to first meet someone and have unconditional love for them. I had never thought that experience would bring so much richness to my life.
