Philosophy Essay Topics & Ideas

Philosophy is the study of knowledge, reality, and existence. A philosopher attempts to answer questions of what we can know about the world, how we can know it, and whether it’s possible to know anything at all.

Philosophers are often concerned with epistemology—the study of knowledge—and ontology—the study of being or existence. This means that they investigate questions like: What is truth? What is beauty? How do we know that something is beautiful? What is justice? How do we determine what is just?

How to Choose Essay Topic on Philosophy?

  1. You should choose a topic which is of your interest. The more interested you are in the topic, the better you can write about it.
  2. Make a list of things that make you happy and be sure to include things that are not related to material things.
  3. Think about your childhood and what made it special for you. Do not forget to include those memories that were negative as well as positive because they can teach us a lot about ourselves and how we feel about ourselves.
  4. Think about the things that you would like to accomplish in your lifetime and write them down on paper so that they will become more real for you in the future when it is time for action rather than just fantasy or daydreaming about what might happen someday if everything goes according to plan (which rarely happens anyway).
  5. Try to avoid choosing topics that are too broad, or too narrow. For example, if you are asked to write about “the meaning of life”, then this is too broad a topic so you will have to narrow down your idea to something more specific like “How do people find meaning in life?” or “What is the meaning of life according to Buddhism?”
  6. Choose an essay topic which is related to your coursework or personal interests so that you can easily find enough information on the subject and also it would not be difficult for you to write about it.

Tips on How to Write Philosophy Essay

Philosophy essays are written to explain, analyze, and evaluate an issue or problem. They are usually written in response to a prompt or question, such as “What is the role of education in a democratic society?” or “Is there a difference between honesty and truthfulness?”

The following five tips will help you write a philosophy essay:

  1. Read the prompt carefully before you begin writing.
  2. Find out what kind of argument the author wants to make before you start your essay.
  3. Make sure that your introduction clearly states your thesis statement so that it is easy for the reader to follow along with your paper.
  4. Use evidence from outside sources such as books, articles, interviews, etc., in order to prove your thesis statement true or false.
  5. End your essay with an appropriate conclusion paragraph that summarizes everything said previously while also providing some insight into how you feel about what was discussed throughout the entire paper.
