Beowulf returns home a hero and is celebrated by his people.
Beowulf is a legendary hero who comes to the aid of King Hrothgar when his kingdom is terrorized by Grendel. When Beowulf arrives at Heorot, Grendel has already killed one of Hrothgar’s warriors and injured others. The monster also steals into Heorot every night and kills more men before retreating back into the marshes where he lives with his mother, an even more terrible monster than he himself is.
When Beowulf arrives in Denmark to help Hrothgar defeat Grendel he meets with Hrothgar and tells him about his adventures fighting dragons and other monsters in his homeland. When Grendel attacks again, Beowulf kills him using only his bare hands. Afterward, he returns home but returns many years later when another dragon attacks Hrothgar’s kingdom once again. This time, however, Beowulf is mortally wounded in the battle but still manages to kill the dragon before dying himself.
