Grendel is mortally wounded by Beowulf and dies. Beowulf then tears off Grendel's arm and presents it to Hrothgar as a trophy.
Detailed answer:

Beowulf, the hero of the epic poem Beowulf, comes to Denmark to fight with Grendel, a monster who terrorizes the kingdom. Hrothgar has been plagued by the monster Grendel and his mother, who steal men from his kingdom and threaten them in the night. Beowulf decides to fight Grendel and defeat him so that he can rid the kingdom of these fearsome creatures.
A dragon attacks the hall where Beowulf’s men are sleeping and kills many of them. The two fight fiercely, but Beowulf is victorious. He returns home to Geatland, a hero, having defeated both Grendel and his mother, who comes to avenge her son’s death. Beowulf goes home with Grendel’s arm as a trophy and tells his king, Hrothgar, about his adventures. Hrothgar rewards him with gold and land.
Years later, Beowulf becomes king of Geatland himself and goes on to fight a dragon that has been terrorizing the countryside there. He rules for 50 years before he fights the dragon and gets mortally wounded in the fight but is remembered as one of history’s greatest heroes.
