There is no direct mention of abortion in the Bible. Some Christians view human life as beginning at conception, and therefore conclude that abortion is equal to murder. Other Christians believe that abortion may be permissible in certain cases, such as when the mother’s life is endangered by the pregnancy. The Old Testament includes a passage (Exodus 21:22-25) that some Christians interpret as condemning abortion; others believe it refers only to specific types of harm inflicted on the fetus. In Luke 1:41-44, Jesus is said to have protected a pregnant woman from being harmed by a tyrant ruler. Arguments about abortion often take the form of disagreements over whether an embryo or fetus is a person, and whether or not a woman has a right to choose an abortion. Some Christians believe that abortion is wrong because it goes against the will of God, while others argue that abortion may be permissible in some cases as it is an act of love and compassion. Some Christians believe that abortion is a sin, and that those who have had an abortion should seek forgiveness from God; others believe that abortion is a personal decision, and that it is up to the individual to decide whether or not to have one. There is no consensus among Christians on the issue of abortion.
