What Happened to Frida Kahlo?

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who was best known for her self-portraits and her role as an icon in the Surrealist movement. She was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, Mexico City. Frida began painting at age 15 and went on to study art at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City. She married fellow artist Diego Rivera in 1929, and the couple had two children together.
Kahlo’s work focused on themes of pain and suffering. Her distinctive style earned her international acclaim, and she was recognized as a pioneer of modern art by many critics.
Unfortunately, Kahlo was injured when she fell off a bus during an accident on Avenida Insurgentes in Mexico City. She suffered severe spinal injuries that left her unable to walk without assistance for the rest of her life. Her injuries were so severe that doctors recommended that she undergo surgery immediately if she wanted any chance at recovery; however, this surgery would likely leave her paralyzed from the waist down for life if it failed. On July 13th, 1954 Frida Kahlo passed away from pneumonia at age 47 after suffering from polio since childhood.
She often depicted herself as an icon of Mexican culture, wearing traditional Mexican clothing and jewelry while posing with animals or plants that symbolized aspects of her personality or experiences. To this day, Kahlo’s work is still celebrated by feminists everywhere because it inspired generations to find their voices and become artists themselves.
