Empathy is the ability to perceive, understand, and respond to the emotions of others. Empathy is a part of emotional intelligence, which allows you to recognize and understand your own emotions as well as those of others. Empathy is important in social relationships and allows us to connect with other people. Empathy helps us understand and respond to the needs of others—for instance, it allows the caregiver to recognize when someone else is sick or sad and respond appropriately. Empathy is important in communication because it fosters trust, understanding, and rapport between people; without empathy, it would be difficult for two people to communicate effectively with each other. Empathy helps us build trust with others by demonstrating that we care about their feelings; if you can empathize with someone, that person will be more likely to trust you because he knows that you care about his feelings or wellbeing. Empathy involves both your ability to recognize another person’s emotions (e.g., if someone looks scared or angry) as well as your response to those emotions (e.g., feeling scared or angry yourself). When you empathize with someone else’s emotions, it helps build rapport between the two of you; for example, if your friend is feeling sad, you can ask him how he is doing and let him know that you’re there for him.
