1984 was written by George Orwell in 1948. The novel takes place in the future year of 1984, and it follows the life of Winston Smith who is a member of the Party, which is the ruling government in the novel’s society. Winston rebels against the Party by having a secret relationship with another woman named Julia. The Party finds out about Winston’s rebellion, punishes him by sending him to prison where he is tortured and brainwashed by the Party. He is eventually released from prison but he is a changed man. The novel ends with Winston betraying Julia and accepting the Party’s control over him.
1984 is a warning about government control and how it can negatively affect people’s lives if we don’t fight for freedom and liberty.
