The Giver is set in a seemingly perfect, but actually dystopian, future society. The main character, Jonas, is chosen to become the next Receiver of Memory. The Giver is the only person in this futuristic society who has any memory of the past. Jonas begins to see the flaws in his society and eventually rebels against it by escaping with his new friend and mentor, The Giver. Jonas and The Giver find themselves in a completely different society that is more primitive than their own but one that treats them with kindness and respect unlike their own society did which makes them feel happy for the first time in their lives. Eventually they find their way back home after being lost for so long only to discover that their former community has changed for the better due to their absence and new insights about life gained from their experiences outside its boundaries. In my opinion it’s a story about freedom, choice and how important memories are to us all no matter what type of future world we live in or how advanced we may become technologically or scientifically.”
