Where is Frida Kahlo From?

Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907–July 13, 1954) was a Mexican artist known for her self-portraits. Kahlo’s father, Guillermo Kahlo, was a photographer and her mother, Matilde Calderón y González, was a housewife. Kahlo had three sisters: Cristina, Margarita, and Matilde, and two brothers: Guillermo and Antonio. As a child she contracted polio at the age of six, which left her right leg thinner than her left. She also suffered from spinal problems and chronic pain throughout her life. Kahlo was a student at the National Preparatory School where she met Diego Rivera. The two married in 1929 and divorced in 1940 but remarried in 1940. Kahlo’s art was influenced by Mexican popular art, or folk art, and by the country’s indigenous cultures. Her self-portraits often incorporated elements of traditional dress and symbolism from Mexican culture. In 1925, Kahlo was injured in a bus accident in Mexico City that left her with a broken spinal column, broken bones, and a shattered pelvis. She underwent more than 30 operations over the course of her life. Kahlo died at age 47 on July 13, 1954, from a pulmonary embolism. Her work has been celebrated internationally and is considered among the most important produced during the 20th century.
