Detailed answer:

The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton is a classic novel about teenage gangs in Oklahoma. It was first published in 1967, and is told from the point of view of fourteen-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, a member of the Greasers gang. The other members of his gang are Sodapop, Darry, Two-Bit and Johnny. The main characters in The Outsiders are Ponyboy Curtis and Sodapop Curtis. The Greasers are constantly in conflict with a rival gang of wealthy kids from the other side of town, known as the Socs. One night, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade are attacked by a group of Socs, and Johnny kills one of them with a knife before he himself is killed by police officer Bob Sheldon. Ponyboy and Johnny flee to an abandoned church in the country where they are cared for by a kindly stranger; this turns out to be Dallas Winston, another former member of Ponyboy’s gang who left some time ago after being badly beaten up by Bob Sheldon during a fight when Bob was trying to arrest him. When Dallas gets into another fight with an off duty police officer at a bar in town, he flees; unable to get away on foot due to his injuries he steals a car but crashes it while trying to avoid hitting a dog on the road. A woman stops her car to help him but, when she finds out who he is and what he is doing, she drives off. Dallas is saved by Ponyboy and Darry, who take him back to their home.
