This lack of talent and skill meant that he could only maintain his wealth through illegal means—selling bootlegged alcohol during prohibition—which ultimately led to his downfall when Tom Buchanan found out about his business and told Wilson about it in order to get revenge on Gatsby for cheating on Daisy with her cousin Myrtle (who had killed herself after learning about their affair).
