SpongeBob Squarepants is an animated TV series created by Marine Biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. It showcases a yellow sea sponge who lives in a pineapple at Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob, known for his energy, has a pet snail named Gary. Living two houses away from him is his best friend Patrick Star, while next to SpongeBob resides his co-worker and neighbor Squidward Tentacles. Squidward despises SpongeBob, Patrick, and their workplace at the Krusty Krabs.
SpongeBob takes pleasure in his job at the Krusty Krabs and delights in irritating Squidward. The Krusty Krabs holds immense significance for SpongeBob, to the extent that he would willingly work there without receiving any payment. The show itself is renowned for its high-speed nature. As stated by a study conducted by the University of Virginia, referenced in Psychology Today, four-year-old children were divided into three groups: one group viewed SpongeBob, another watched Caillou, and the remaining group participated in drawing. Immediately after viewing these programs, the children who observed SpongeBob performed more poorly compared to the other two groups.
I will be using textual analysis to analyze this artifact. In one of the episodes called “Not Normal,” SpongeBob and Squidward engaged in their usual fight. During the confrontation, Squidward remarked that SpongeBob was not normal. This deeply affected SpongeBob, leading him to transform himself into what he believed to be normal. However, this drastic change had negative consequences on his work and relationships with friends. As he lost almost everything he had, SpongeBob realized that being normal was not suitable for him. Seeking assistance, he turned to Patrick to help him return to his abnormal self. Their actions ultimately resulted in them humiliating themselves and becoming the subject of public mockery.
This episode conveys the idea that causing emotional harm to others and behaving foolishly in front of them is deemed acceptable. The remark made by Squidward, where he labels SpongeBob as abnormal, triggers a significant transformation in SpongeBob’s character. This can be extremely damaging and detrimental to one’s self-esteem. Nevertheless, Patrick aids SpongeBob in reverting back to his initial state through activities such as sliding down the sidewalk and licking sand. These actions bring them happiness while also offering children enjoyable experiences.
SpongeBob Squarepants and Squidward Tentacles are characters from the popular Nickelodeon show, SpongeBob Squarepants. Despite residing under the sea, they have unique personalities and interests that differentiate them.

SpongeBob finds enjoyment in his role as a fry cook at the Crabby Patty, whereas Squidward loathes his position as Mr. Crabs’ cashier. Their dissimilar tastes also extend to their choice of food – SpongeBob has an affinity for crabby patty burgers, while Squidward’s preference lies with bread from a can. Additionally, they pursue different hobbies; Squidward plays his clarinet (named Claire), while SpongeBob struggles to remain stationary. As a result, he frequently spends time with his closest companion Patrick, who resides two houses away beneath a rock.
It is easy to see that SpongeBob Squarepants and Squidward Tentacles are incredibly dissimilar. Despite residing in the same underwater environment, their personalities and interests bear no resemblance to one another.
