Abortion: A Womans Choice or an Act of Murder

Table of Content

Is abortion a choice or is it murder? Abortion is one of the most controversial subjects of this generation. A surgical procedure to end a pregnancy by removing the fetus and placentas from the uterus is another way to describe this act. This procedure is usually preformed between six or twelve weeks into a pregnancy. However, some are done later into a pregnancy. Should a fetus be considered a life while still inside the womb? Some people think that life begins at birth; but, life starts long before-life begins at conception. At eight weeks, the fetus is already very active.

Using an ultrasonic stethoscope, the heart beat can be heard. At ten weeks, hands and feet are perfectly formed. The fetus swims around and can suck its’ thumb. At fourteen weeks, the fetus is six inches long and weighs about half a pound. Eyelashes and even fine hair is growing. The fetus can hear noises outside the womb. The mother can now feel the fetus moving around and kicking. The mother is now deciding if the fetus should be aborted. Abortion is legal in this country until the day of birth.

Many people do not realize this. If people were told, they would refuse to believe this. Yet, the fact remains that a woman can legally about her baby at any time during her pregnancy. The only thing that changes their mind is the method and the cost. Since abortion has been legalized, approximately 1,500,000 babies have been aborted each year. Abortion is called a “choice.” If this is true, women should know what they are choosing.

Abortion is a very controversial subject that has been continually argued over for the past few years and probably many years to come. The main controversy is should abortion be legalized? First before we get into the many sides of abortion we must first define abortion. Abortion is the destruction of the fetus or unborn child while the child is still in the mother’s womb. This can be done by almost anyone from the mother herself to back alley abortions and even to abortions by clinics set up especially for this purpose. There are two sides to this abortion topic the PRO-LIFE which is those who are against abortion altogether and the PRO- CHOICE or those who believe it is the woman’s right to choose if she wants to have an abortion.

These two groups offer different solutions to problem. The pro-life solution is to have the child and basically live with it. They believe abortion is not an answer. The pro-choice solution is abortion because of reasons they feel are appropriate. Although abortion is morally and ethically wrong should it be legal for victims of rape or incest who have no other alternative? There is no real answer to this controversy, there are two sides to it though which have been arguing for many years over the subject.

The first is the pro-life group. This group does not believe in the abortion factor. To understand where the pro-life stands we must first understand its beliefs and reasons for its beliefs. Then we can discuss what their solution to the abortion topic is. Pro-life believes that and incest are very emotional topics. “They often elicit throughout the population feelings of revulsion; people draw back from the issue of rape and incest. People don’t know how to handle a person who is in that much pain. There is no quick fix. That is why it is difficult for even pro-life people to come to grips with the argument over abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Much of the issue of abortion has been over the debate about the morality of this procedure. The two factions involved in this controversy are often those who oppose abortion and those who are for it. A person who is Pro-life (right to life) believes that a fetus’s right to live is indisputable. A person who is Pro-choice contends that a women’s right to abortion is absolute. Both viewpoints have shaped the way abortion has been dealt with today in society. It also makes up the viewpoints of organizations, the Church, the law of the land and society itself. Research has shown that it is an issue that existed centuries ago and will continue to exist today.

For those who would like to ban abortion altogether, abortion boils down to a matter of life and death. With an abortion, the fetus dies. Without an abortion, the fetus may continue to live. Pro- choicers’ reject the fact that abortion is about killing. They believe that the issue is about a pregnant woman’s right to control her body. They argue that a fetus is a collection of cells, nothing more than a potential life. The arguments, to them, are about choice. A pregnant woman must have the ability to terminate her pregnancy if she so chooses. People consider abortion as baby killing and other’s talk about how legal abortion safeguards women’s rights. Some believe life begins at conception and others hold that the early fetus is very far from being a human. Many use poverty, fragile mental health, or concerns about deformities to justify a woman in having an abortion.
