Abortion
Abortion causes the death of the fetus, which is totally devoid of protection and strength. Legalized abortion is the consequence of disregarding the value of human life. There are two tragedies involved in this process, first, the unborn child is cruelly deprived of experiencing life; and second, the mother would be deprived of caring and nurturing her unborn child in the future, which would have provided them with immense joy.
As a medical procedure, abortion entails quite a bit of risk. The daily mortality caused by unsafe abortions is approximately two hundred. On the other hand, if a woman continues her pregnancy to term, then her chances of acquiring breast cancer are appreciably reduced. Moreover, abortion frequently causes severe pain and loss of blood. Several females, who undergo abortion, fall prey to the post abortion syndrome, which causes felling of resentment, remorse and regret (Marshall).
Depression, anxiety and suicide are commonly found in the women who had undergone an abortion. Several studies in this regard had established that such women are more susceptible to psychological trauma. The studies further revealed that women who had undergone an abortion were vulnerable to drug and substance abuse. They were also prone to engage in bizarre and self – destructive behavior. A majority of the women who undergone an abortion, had supported it prior to their abortion; but subsequently, they had campaigned against abortion. In most instances, abortion had made women feel lonely, powerless and abandoned. They felt that they had violated the rules of nature (Mealey).
California and New York have a higher rate of abortion than Kansas and Dakota, because the former strongly advocate contraception, whereas the latter do not. The increase in the rate of abortion is due to the decision in Roe v. Wade, and the consequences of the sexual revolution (Klein).
There was an unprecedented increase in abortions in 1990, with 1.6 million. This reduced to 1.2 million in the year 2005. This indicates an attitudinal change towards abortion. The causes for this change are numerous and some of them are the various educational efforts that provide information about the development of the fetus and abortion; and legislation that has provided women with sufficient information, so that they can think about the consequences of abortion. In addition, the right to information laws provides women with adequate knowledge about the risk inherent in abortion and the choices available to her. Those who promote abortion are vehemently opposed to these measures, because a knowledgeable mother might not be willing to undergo an abortion. Moreover, as an aside, it bodes no good for providers of abortion, if women desist from it (Darla).
In Roe v Wade, the US Supreme Court held that abortions were subject to the legislation extant in the states of the Union. In that case the Court made abortion available to those who required it, and thus departed from its concept of life, liberty and justice for all. The statistics indicate that nearly forty – six million still born children had been destroyed by abortion since the year 1973. This decision helped women by protecting their right to take independent decision regarding their lives. (American Civil Liberties Union).
Subsequent, to the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, around forty million unborn children were cruelly deprived of their life. This number represents a third of the children born in that period. The fetuses that had been aborted, had been deprived of their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, which had been vouchsafed to all the US citizens by the founding fathers of this nation. The human sacrifices performed by the ancient civilizations arouse our horror and opprobrium, however, this large scale slaughter of innocent and unborn children is permitted without any restraint (Bohannon). Moreover, several studies have revealed that legalized abortion does not prevent the death of pregnant women. It affects the physical and psychological health of its victims, resulting in many unwelcome problems. Sexually transmitted diseases will be on their increase due to legalized abortion. Moreover, admissions to the hospitals will increase due to repeated abortions and ectopic pregnancies (Forsythe) . Therefore, abortion is an undesirable option.
Therefore, it can be concluded that death is a major consequence of abortion. Moreover, it affects the psychological health of women, and the interests of the family. By making abortion illegal, the innocent lives of the unborn can be saved, which in turn would safeguard the morality of mankind. The well being of the family and the society is ensured by saving the woman’s health as well as protecting the interests of the unborn child.
