Beena Kannan, born on 17 July 1960 in Kottayam, Kerala, India, joined her family’s textile retailing business in 1980 after university. Working alongside her father and husband, she gained recognition as one of the prominent wedding silk sari designers in south India. Despite the influence of Western and North Indian fashions, Beena Kannan made it her mission to uphold the status of saris. In 2007, she made headlines by creating the longest silk sari ever, measuring half a kilometer, which earned her a place in the Guinness Book of Records and Limca Book of Records.

Expanding her reach beyond India, Beena Kannan launched her sari designs in the UAE in 2007 and in the USA in 2009. Her dedication to supporting weaving communities earned her a prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Coimbatore Erode Weaving community in 2009. In September 2011, her designed saris were showcased on the “Swarovski Elements 2011” Ramp. In addition to her thriving business capabilities, Beena Kannan is also a devoted wife and mother of three, as well as a philanthropist involved in community initiatives.

Interestingly, Beena Kannan developed a passion for saree design only after completing her graduation. She initially learned about the trade from her father Thiruvenkidam, who was already established in the saree business. Today, Beena Kannan embraces innovation by reviving traditional techniques and incorporating them into modern fabrics. She travels extensively throughout India, venturing into remote villages to source various types of sarees. Guided by her natural flair and practical experience, Beena Kannan continues to make strides in the world of saree design. Her ambition is to connect with overseas Keralites, particularly those residing in the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Beena specializes in creating bridal brocades for sarees, adorned with gold and silver strands embellished with pearls. However, saree design is not her sole passion. Beena also possesses another talent – she is a skilled classical bharathanatyam dancer. She received one year of training from Vilasini, a teacher at Kalakshetra, and subsequently enrolled in Dharani School. Her committed mentor is SyamalaSurendran.
