North Korea was effected by the cold war politically and intellectually, as proven by “National Security Council Report, NCSC 8/2, “Position of the United States with Respect to Korea”” and “Soviet Report on Communists in Korea, 945”, and South Korea was effected by the Cold War economically, as referred to in “Letter to General-Lieutenant Hodge on Northern Korea Providing Electricity to Southern Korea”. The letter to General-Lieutenant Hodge affected South Korea economically. North Korean Colonel Gigantic, a member of the Provisional People’s Committee of North Korea, wrote the letter.
Gigantic was a member of the North Korean communist party that worked closely with the Soviet Union. The letter was written on January 01 , 1947, two years after the end of World War II. During this time World War II was over however the tensions between the Soviet union and the United States were as tense as ever. Gigantic was writing this letter to General-Lieutenant Hodge of the United States of America, who will ultimately pass it along to the President. This shows that even though the conflict was between North and South Korea the US and the USSR were still very much involved.
The letter was written to inform the US of the debt that South Korea owes North Korea. This document proves how closely the USSR and US were involved in many countries conflicts during the time period. The Cold War affected South Korea economically. Due to the Cold War, South Korea now has many economic struggles. As Gigantic states, the Cold War took a toll on many South Korean workers, “Due to the balance deficit, major repairs and equipment maintenance is not taking place, and there are great delays in the salary of the maintenance personnel”(legating).
Because of the Cold War, South Korea received financial aid from USA. Gigantic states in the letter how he plans on getting North Koreans debt paid back and he immediately assumes USA will pay for it, “If you are interested that South Korea continues to receive the regular, uninterrupted supply of electricity room North Korean power stations, please be so kind as to assist in providing compensation for the provided bill”(legating). The USSR and USA affected many countries in many ways throughout the Cold War. The Soviet Report on Communists in Korea affected North Korea politically.
A Soviet communist in North Korea wrote this report. This report was written in 1 945, the same year that World War II ended and a year when the relationship between the CSS and USSR became tense. The report was written for Maleness, a Soviet Communist Party leader. The report was produced to explain how the communist movement was going in Korea. This report ultimately chose Kim II Sung as the leader of North Korea. The Cold War affected North Korea politically. Because of the Cold War, the Soviets chose the leader of North Korea.
In the report the author gives many reasons why he believes Kim II Sung should be the leader of Korea, “KIM IL SUNG is popular among all democratic sections of the population, especially among the peasants. KIM IL SUNG is a suitable candidate in a future Korean government. If it weren’t for the Soviets, there would be less separation and the North and South Korean governments would be completely different.
The author refers to the mass separation between the two parties but doesn’t really pay any attention to it, “In South Korea, besides the Communist Party, the strongest party is the Democratic Party, which represents the interests of the big landowners and capitalists. The party numbers about 10,000 and is headed by Song Jinn-u. The party openly engages in pro-imperialist and anti- Communist on Communists in Korea). Henry A Kissing, the Assistant to the president of the United States, wrote this report. Kissing wrote this on March 22, 1949. 1949 was after the Marshall Plan was announced. Kissing wrote this to the President of the United States of America. Kissing wrote the report to discuss the issues in Korea. Kissing is trying to get across that things are very tense between the Communists and Democrats in Korea. These conflicts eventually led to the Korean War and conflicts that continue to this day. The Cold War affected the North Koreans Intellectually.
If it were not for the Soviets and the Cold War, North Korea would not be such a confined state. Kissing talks about the reason for the conflict in Korea and talks about the influence the Soviets have over Koreans government, “The same compulsion which demands total power over all men within a Soviet state without a single exception, demands total power over all Communist Parties and all states under Soviet domination… The antipathy of slavery to freedom explains the iron curtain; the isolation, the tetrarch of the society whose end is absolute power”(Kissing 8).

Kissing talks about the Soviet intentions in Korea and states, ‘The massive fact of the iron curtain isolating the Soviet peoples from the outside world, the repeated political purges within the USSR and the institutionalized crimes of the MOVED are evidence that the Kremlin does not feel secure at home and that ‘the entire coercive force of the socialist state” is more than ever one of seeking to impose its absolute authority over “the economy, manner of life, and consciousness of 13).
