Cons of Plastic Water Bottles Baysinger

¨Environmental activist and marine wildlife conservation¨

I choose this quote because I felt that people have evolved over time along with plastic water bottles without thinking about what the outcome was going to be.

Over the years we’ve had a mass production of plastic water bottle and how its been so easy to access them but we have never thought about how it is made or how it affects our environment and how can we change this problem and come up with a solution to ban the bottle.

Why it’s Not Okay to Refill

Bottling companies use the same tap water when producing water bottles. When Business make products especially if you can consume it, this all has to go through the FDA ¨food and drug administration¨ to make sure the product is okay to sell. ¨The industrial world are producing bottled water that can be no healthier than tap water. The bottling of water can cost up to 10,000 times more to produce. A regular price of $2.50 per liter ($10 per gallon), bottled water costs more than gasoline, which currently is an average of $2.49 per gallon¨(Whitwham 1).

Additionally, We need to make others see why this is a major concern since this has an effect on everybody. A website called Business Insider main focus is on some popular brands like Aquafina, Nestle, and Dasani that contains tiny plastic particles in their water and explains that it is tough to detect these particles since they are smaller than a single piece of hair which can have an effect that involves having a chance of health problems like a higher risk of cancer. Another is that since we put this into our ocean the little plastics particles are harming sea creatures. In some species, they’re even slowing down growth and reproduction (Brueck 1).

An elementary teacher in France is concerned to figure out what’s in the plastic water bottles,’I don’t know how they run tests on the water. I don’t know what standards they have to meet,’ she said. ‘I’m paying for these bottles of water and I want to know what I’m getting” (4Ocean 1). This quote is a good example of showing the concern of wanting to know what is being put into our body and what is in these different type of products. A website called Springer mainly focus on what’s being put into these water bottles when they are producing and selling them to customers, that can be a potential health risk due to plant uptake of the contaminant metalloid that is in most plastic water bottles that are produced. Along of how we transport all these cases of plastic water bottles and we shipped them about ¨5592.341 miles from Fiji and other faraway places to satisfy the demand for chic and exotic bottled water according to this reporter mallory who investigated on this specific topic about wasting money on the bottle itself rather than the water ¨ (Mallory 1). Basically to make long story short, no matter where you get the plastic water bottle you’ll be buying the plastic bottle itself rather than the water which is basically tap water. What is even worse is if we reuse the plastic bottle itself and can break and collect bacteria, mold ad chemicals that can put you in a serious health situation (BPA facts 1).

Between 1994 and 2017, U.S. consumption soared 284% to nearly 42 gallons a year per person( Elibrary 1). Most plastic bottle is made of this plastic that is not able to decompose that is called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Since most plastic bottles are made of this source it really depends on how you treat the bottle with storage conditions and temperatures (Recycling 1). It can take over 1,000 years to decomposed now if they started to produce plastic in the 50s-60’s then how much has plastic has already decomposed especially since we are still making the product it will just keep adding up. Only 14% of people will recycle them rather than throwing them away which would add to the collections of other plastic waste products (NewAdmin 1). Most of the time when people throw plastic bottles away they don’t even end up at the landfill, but rather be in parks and streets where we can basically see them almost anywhere. The United Nations website stated of them estimates that by 2050, the oceans will carry more plastic than fish (United 1). Since what’s made of the plastic that is used in water bottles is a plastic that isn’t biodegradable, which is harmful to our environment. The ingredients for plastic water bottle are actually made up of fossil fuel and oil which is very harmful to our environment along with toxins like BPA-(industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960) from the Conserve Energy Future website. It’s not just for water bottles, it also involves other drinks like sugar products that is mostly made from (PET). They are able to recycle, but as their use soars across the globe, efforts to collect and recycle the bottles to keep them from polluting the oceans but are failing to keep up it since it cost a lot of money and energy to manufacture the bottle according to Healthy Human website.

A source from the Emporia Gazette brought to my attention that Emporia tap water is the second best in the world and that our recent governor brownback says “I want to congratulate this city for taking special pride in a very simple but essential thing: the water. “You’ve obviously taken great pride in being able to have the quality of water you do here.” Now that we’ve been able to share our water around four to five districts near but some people still don’t trust the tap (Gazette 3).

There are different ways how we can avoid using plastic water bottles and go for a more safer and healthier product that still has the same benefits as they do. The most popular items in the market is a automatic filter for your sink if you don’t trust the tap water. Can have some water bottles that is metal or able to recycle that can save money since you’ll be able to reuse them and have your personal touch. You can order some of these items through a couple of website or stores. Lately they been experimenting with some seaweed or kelp to see if this is a healthier way to switch from the plastic water bottle that is helpful and edible so no waste according to Spoons website that many focus of finding alternative ways to switch from the bottle .

If we switch to one of the products i introduced we can cut down that percentage of that waste to help our planet, not putting unaware harmful things into our body and to make it safer for animals so they don’t come across it along with save money that can be put into some good use and can also reuse the leftover plastic water bottle for a everyday resource (Pal 1) . The outcome of banning the plastic water bottles, it would be harder for us to transport or get filter water easily since some people don’t have that accessed or enough money to get as easily as others. Along with that it would make the sugar products go up more and so people would choose a less healthy options. One thing we can do is pay attention to this and have other help find more ideas to find the answer.

Banning the plastic bottle would be a good solution in our society today since most people aren’t as cautions with our resources since the plastic water bottles basically keep adding on to our pollution crisis while wasting money and energy that we could put into good use rather than of making these products. If everyone in America recycled just one plastic bottle, those materials could make more than 54 million T-shirts or about 6.5 million fleece jackets that we can give to other people that are involved with a crisis like the homeless ect, according to Repreve data (USA today). There are so many ways of being able to reuse the plastic bottle not just for water but for a more beneficial uses like playgrounds, clothes, or can get money if you recycle them! If we recycle in general we would be able to use this toxic waste into something that is more useful not just us but for animals as well. It does not take one person to stop and make a change it takes everybody especially the ones who really care about the future of them and others. Yes, there are some outcomes that aren the best, but I know that we can find a solution for both sides of this argument. Comment by Scott Bonnet:
