Cannabis sativa/indica, or more commonly referred to as marijuana, is a naturally occurring plant that recognized all over the world, especially for the topic controversially discussed among many about the legalization of this product. The list of people who have tried and used marijuana is outstanding and averages out at over 100 million people just in the United States. Some of the people on this list include prominent individuals such as Barrack Obama, Bill Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Marylin Monroe and many more. This outstanding list can be expanded to most Hollywood celebrities, rappers, students attending high school and college, and even police officers who are required to implement the law. Marijuana has many beneficial uses medically which is just one of the many reasons it should be legalized. Regarding American taxpayers, marijuana could potentially save millions or even billions of dollars to them. It is also far less dangerous than other harmful substances such as tobacco and alcohol that are legal to buy at the mere ages of 18 and 21.
Predominantly, cannabis should be made legal because it uses in the medical field are outstanding. Some conditions such as multiple sclerosis required cannabis as a main constituent to their medical treatment. Other health problems like the complications associated with chemo treatment for cancer patients such as nausea, vomiting, chronic pain, etc. can also be beneficially assisted with the use of marijuana. Marijuana can also be applied to the health issues associated with asthma. When the cannabis plant is inhaled in a smoke form it caused the lungs to open up in asthmatic patients who are suffering from an asthma attack. Marijuana is also used in the treatment of people suffering from HIV/AIDS and helps to improve their appetite loss issues. Overall the medical purposes and uses of cannabis are one of the most important. This is a principal reason why it should be legalized.
Furthermore, by legalizing marijuana, American taxpayers as a whole are going to save billions of dollars every single year. In just one year the government averages about fifty billion dollars being spent on the war against illegal drugs. $7.7 billion alone is spent on attempting to eradicate marijuana. The drug war is going to persist but by legitimizing marijuana, that $7.7 billion being spent to obliterate it would be money back in the pockets of hard-working U.S citizens. Also by legalizing marijuana, a new tax source would be generated, increasing the government’s overall proceeds. As of now the main recipient of money from marijuana sales are criminal gangs and drug traffickers. Many of the gangs sell this product in other regions of the world for fear of arrest in the U.S. Essentially, the United States is being deprived of the potential revenue that would be provided through the sales of cannabis.
To continue, cannabis has been proven to be far less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. In the U.S alone there have been a reported 480,000 deaths by the utilization of tobacco and 41,000 deaths resulting from just secondhand exposure to cigarette smoke. About 88,000 die annually from excessive alcohol use. Astonishingly, there have been no disclosed instances of people dying from a marijuana overdose of any kind.
