Something that it is shared by everyone is our personal values. We acquired them from our surroundings, background, family, friends, and life experiences. They may vary from which ones we have but we all have some. From the moment we are born these values are taught and implied to us by our parents. It is them who have the responsibility to show us the values they think are necessary for us to be better humans, better citizens. Values and origin

The values that I mostly follow today are integrity, honesty, and loyalty. Integrity is a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: incorruptibility (Merriam dictionary). Integrity gives a person strength to make difficult decisions. Integrity is a learned behavior that can be relied upon at all times. Honesty is a fairness and straightforwardness of conduct (Merriam dictionary). Honesty is one of the values that is very important simply because it says a lot about the respect level that a person holds for you. Loyalty is a feeling of strong support for someone or something (Merriam dictionary). Loyalty really says it all about an individual because it gives security and trust. With a loyal person, you do not have to worry about what they would or if they have your best interests at heart. The person in my life who has helped shape my values is my mother. My father left when I was toddler and it was her that set most of the values I now try to implement in my own children. Growing up and watching her and the way she handled situations has taught me a lot. My mother is a very honest, loyal, trustworthy person. She instilled this values in me. My mother taught me the true meaning of “treat others how you wish to be treated”. Today it is my duty to pass some of those values on to my children so they can become respectful citizens.

    Values in the workplace
In my law enforcement profession I believe that honesty, integrity, loyalty along with respect are essential to the job. When working with people it is very important to have these values or those similar to these simply because it falls along the lines of the public’s trust. The community need to know that you respect them and that you do not look down upon them in order for them to open up and believe you are doing your best to protect their safety and enforce the laws. Integrity is the most important within this profession and requires that all personnel act with fairness and professionalism. Striving to follow rules and do the right thing even when no one is looking is necessary in law enforcement. This prevents me from mistakes, making poor decisions and jeopardizing the life of others or the reputation of and the organization. I have seen many people in law enforcement lose money, careers, and even their families for lack of integrity and self-respect. Large corporations like Enron have fallen creating mistrust and financial hardships to others. Because of individuals like this the companies suffered major losses and created a ripple effect of awareness. This could be a big problem because greed can push people to make bad choices and affecting the lives of others. Conclusion

Personal values are a direct influence of parents, culture, religion, beliefs and life experiences. The strongest influence comes from parents. Children develop these values from their parents and environment as they absorb everything around them. As children grow, their sphere of influence evolves as more outside sources come into their lives. Working with individuals that share similar core values as your own and who abide by the code of ethics expected from them is critical in law enforcement or any other profession. My personal values allow me to treat others as I want to be treated and not be judgmental toward anyone. As a parent, my life has been about caring for my children. I intend to put my efforts into my family and career to help those in need, and to always strive to be a better person.
