Detailed answer:

Jay Gatsby was the title character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby. He was born James Gatz, which was his real name. His father died when he was young, and his mother worked hard to support him and his sister. After graduating from high school, he moved to New York City to attend college, but dropped out after a year and went to work as a clerk in a Manhattan hotel.
Gatsby quickly became successful as a stockbroker and made his fortune through illegal activities such as bootlegging and gambling. He was also in love with Daisy Buchanan, who had married Tom Buchanan — another wealthy man who lived on Long Island with her husband and her husband’s mistress Myrtle Wilson — after Gatsby served in the army during World War I.
Gatsby’s love for Daisy eventually led to tragedy when Tom found out about their affair and killed Myrtle herself by throwing a pair of glasses at her face during an argument over driving drunk on the road one night while drunk himself
