Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian Renaissance artist, scientist, engineer, mathematician, and philosopher. He is best known for his paintings The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper but also made contributions to other fields, including anatomy, astronomy, civil engineering, and optics. Da Vinci made significant contributions to a number of fields during his lifetime including anatomy and civil engineering. He is often referred to as the archetype of the “Renaissance man” or “universal genius”. Da Vinci’s life and work have been the subject of numerous books, films and TV shows of which many are considered accurate as well as historically important in their own right. Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519 at the age of 67. The cause of death remains uncertain, but it is believed to have been natural causes. Da Vinci was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert at the Château d’Amboise; in 1624, his remains were moved to the Basilica of Saint-Denis, where he lies beside other French kings and queens and are on display there today. Several of da Vinci’s paintings are on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris, including his most famous painting, Mona Lisa.
