Detailed answer:

Jonas—the main character in The Giver—is an eleven-year-old boy, who lives in a society that dictates many aspects of his life, including what he will wear and what job he will have. Jonas is selected to be the Receiver of Memory, a position that comes with great responsibility. Jonas begins to see the world differently after receiving memories from the previous Receiver. Jonas falls in love with a girl named Fiona, even though relationships between people of different ages are not allowed. Jonas starts to question the rules of his society and whether they are really for the best. Jonas tries to escape from the society with Fiona, but they are caught and Fiona is given away. Jonas is forced to give away memories of Fiona to the new Receiver (though he does not). Jonas decides to rebel against the society and releases all its memories into everyone’s minds; chaos ensues as people begin acting irrationally and violently toward one another; Jonas flees his home city and eventually finds a new society where people are able to choose their own fate—one which values freedom over conformity and offers no guarantees about how one’s life will turn out.
