Review of the Article on Global Culture

Read Summary
Summary

The article A Global Analysis of Culture by Alex Thio, a sociology professor at Ohio University, discusses the effects of different cultures on people in four aspects: Cultural Universals, Culture Clash, Ethnocentrism, and Cultural Relativism. Thio argues that cultures are universal in meeting basic human needs, but clashes between different faiths can cause conflict and violence. Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture is superior, leading to a sense of national unity. However, cultural relativism can promote international peace by fostering understanding of other cultures. The author’s analysis of global culture is relevant to cultural diversity, as seen in the example of KFC and McDonald’s entering the Chinese market and the increasing use of foreign brands in fashion. It is important to approach cultural differences dialectically, neither blindly opposing nor blindly accepting foreign influences.

Those different faiths cause culture clash and he mainly talks about this in four points. Third, in Ethnocentrism, he said that as we are born, we are taught that our way of life is the greatest. By these measures, people tend to feel a strong sense of unity as a nation and keep their ethnocentrism to themselves. Both Culture Clash and Ethnocentrism “may create more conflict and violence in the world”. (A Global Analysis of Culture, Alex Thio) Fourth, in Cultural Relativism, the writer thinks cultural relativism help people to understand the cultures of others.

And it is contribute to international peace. In my opinion, agree the analysis of global culture. According to my own culture, in Culture Clash, the most obvious way is KFC and McDonald. The number of teenagers who like eat KFC and McDonald more than Chinese food increased quickly when those brand into Chinese market in 1990s. I think the reason KFC and McDonald can succeed in Chinese market is that the people who was born in 1 980 is tired of eating Chinese food day by day. They eager to try some new stuff in order to content their exploration of the unknown world.

There are some another example like KFC and McDonald, like more and more adults like use the clothes or luxuries of foreign brands to decorate themselves. All these phenomenon are Culture Clash from one culture to the another culture. In my opinion, we should 100k at this problem in a dialectical perspective. We can not blindly oppose foreign things, neither do we blindly accepted it. In conclusion, the writer analyses and summery global culture in these point.
