People with addiction do not have control over their behaviour, actions or usage. Their addiction may reach a point at which it is harmful. Addictions does not only involve physical things, such as drugs or alcohol, but may include virtually anything, ranging from abstract things as gambling to seemingly harmless products, such as chocolate – in other words, addiction may refer to over dosage of a substance or a repeated behaviour such as drug addiction or behavioural addiction. Addiction to substances or activities can sometimes lead to serious problems at school, college, home or work.

They are caused in general by varying degrees of physical, mental, circumstantial and emotional factors. Addiction, often referred to as dependency leads to tolerance a state of which the addicted person needs larger and more regular amounts of whatever they are addicted to, in order to receive the same magnitude.

The researcher feels that there are various reasons that affect the wellbeing of adolescents and some of them being, the objectives and the goals of the adolescent being smashed, Loss of Parental relationship, Disrupted interpersonal relationships, Fading Social and cultural values, subjection to unhealthy environment and so on. Hence this research is an attempt to understand social media addiction and the reason and effects that lead to social, mental and behavioural problems among adolescents Social media addiction is a term that is often used to refer to someone who spends too much time on social media like Facebook and Twitter or other forms of social media. As a result, it affects the person’s daily life. Addiction simply means a compulsive behaviour that leads to negative effects. And in this case, social media addiction is referring to someone who has a compulsive use of social media. For example, people who constantly check updates on Facebook or “stalking” other people for hours. However, it is difficult to tell if someone is a social media addict.

If you spend a few hours into social media checking updates and reading random tweets on Twitter, does that make you an addict? Some people claimed that they spend time on social media to read the news and to find entertainment to kill time; they are not addicted to it. So how can we tell if someone is an addict?

The result of a research that was conducted to know about people who suffer from social media addiction showed that self-disclosure communication creates pleasure in their brain and they conclude by saying that, it makes people happy and high when they talk and think about themselves.

According to them There is no direct conclusion in determining if someone is a social media addict, however, many physicians have observed similar symptoms such as depression, anxiety, psychological disorders, and more are the proofs of social media addiction.

The research is all about what is social media addiction and what are the factors that cause it and how can we cure it and also take precautions to avoid it and also develop strategies to use this media best to our potential without misusing it. and also it gives info about the people who are at risk of this addiction . Excessive use of social media has led to increased Internet addiction, cyber bullying, sex chatting, sleep deprivation, and the decline of face-to-face interaction. According to a study it can even be said that social media addiction can be more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. The impact of anxiety and mental health issues worldwide are mounting, and one cannot underestimate the impact of social media is increasing and the circumstances that lead to anxiety and depression.

So the study uses qualitative and quantitative research to get insights about the effect of social media addiction on the lives of the individual. basically first I went through a few research papers and then I wrote my literature review on the basses of what I found could be improved. Before that I did a survey in my college through a questionnaire format to see how they spend most of their time and how much time they spent using social media apps and a lot more. Then I also observed few people in my family and surrounding people using social media. How they would react to situations that I had pre-planned like for my family members I tried switching off the lights and fans of the room when my brother was playing a game online to get his reaction but I dint get a reaction I wanted and for other situation I did some other reactions time things which failed miserably. With this I was able to draw conclusion to my observation report. Then I clubbed all the information and then completed by research.

Methods: questionnaire and surveys, participant observation methods, focus groups, case study etc. Is to bring about a change in the way we use social media.

Also keep into mind that it is important to take care of ones mental health and not ruin it for social media which was created to as a helping hand.

to study the effects of negative aspects of social media’s contribution towards human behaviour. According to my research I think there our a few precautions that can be taken which can prevent social media addiction. As I have listed above in my literature review. This helps to make my topic more relevant. Following those steps with commitment and self confidence in one self, one can get through it. The individual may develop eyestrain from staring at the screen for too long

  • The individual may suffer from lack of sleep.
  • The individual may also suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome (where you have problems with your hands or wrists from too much typing)
  • The person may suffer from neck strain
  • It can be a distraction to the individual while driving or focusing on work or maybe any activity in general
  • The person have high chances of suffering from low self esteem.

the persons has less real social interactions with people in general Lastly I would like to conclude by saying that it is important to understand that technology was created to help us move forward in various aspects of our life and make things easier for us, and not to waste our time or make us less productive. It is a great way to connect with people worldwide but we should keep in mind that we don’t give up on real face to face communication with people. Also don’t let these online social media platforms take control of your life instead you take control of them and use it to your potential. Also understand that the power of social media can be used in positive way instead of bullying people with it.

To some extent it has changed our lives and our life has become more convenient however if we can use social media smartly in the future it could be a great change for us.
