The Outsiders Alienation The Outsiders is a story that has motley of alienation. Alienation isn’t being taken by aliens. Alienation is uniqueness and someone that is different from another person or group of people. But through the whole story of the Outsiders there is alienation. One symbol of alienation in this story is money between the Greasers and the Socs. The Socs always show the characteristics of being rich because they’re always wearing madras shirts and pants. Like in the fight after Johnny died.
They also drive blue mustangs and live in big houses. One example is when the mustang rolled up on Ponyboy with a group of Socs before he got jumped. But the Greasers don’t have that much money and wear worn blue jeans and white T’s and leather jackets. They also drive busted, run down, used cars. Therefore, the Greasers feel alienated from the Socs. A second symbol of alienation is the hair between the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers have greasier hair. They always have to comb it back, even before fights.
The Greasers carry a comb at all times. An example of it is when Ponyboy and Johnny ran away and Johnny when to the store and brought bleach and things to change their appearance and Ponyboy was trying to fight it. The greasy hair is the main thing that differs the two gangs. It’s like an oath in between the two hoods. One last symbol of alienation in the story is Ponyboy. Ponyboy thinks he’s alienated from everyone else in the Outsiders. He thinks he is alienated from his older brother, Darry, and that he never pleases him no matter what he does.
Pony also feels alienated from the gang (Greasers) because he likes to read books and gets good grades in school. But he knows where he belongs. Alienation plays a big part in the Outsiders. Alienation is uniqueness and someone that is different from another person or group of people. The story (The Outsiders) uses the meaning of alienation through almost all the main characters. Many people have trepidation of alienation today. Some people feel very different from others these days.
