Creation Myths in Documentary “Creation”

Table of Content

Myth archetypes are a very important part of our lives tracing way back to our ancestors. The three major creation myths are aetiological myths, historical myths, and psychological myths. All three of these different myths are what helps the creation myth to be made and understood. With each creation myth one of the three will be used. When in class watching the different forms of creation stories from the documentary “Creation,” Morgan Freeman reviewed the origin stories of many of the world’s great religions. In the documentary “Creation” Morgan Freeman travels the world to find out and learn about religion in the past to present day from all different cultures. When Freeman visited a different place everyday it acted as its own story.

The different stories based on different cultures were taken place in Albuquerque, N.M., to Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, Vatican City, Turkey, Mexico, and many more places. India is the only Asian country included in the series. Morgan Freeman visited all of these places to learn more interesting facts about their cultures religion whether it be Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism or the Mayan faith. All of these different religions are the way people base their daily lives off of. While Morgan Freeman visits all of these places he asks the same questions to every person that he speaks to of that culture. The questions that he asks is “Where did we come from? and What happened “in the beginning?” He asked these two same questions to every person that showed him around in that culture, because he wanted to see the similarities and differences between each culture’s religion. Some creation stories that took place in the documentary “Creation” are when Morgan Freeman visited Jerusalem, Rome, and Vatican. When Freeman visited Jerusalem he first went to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with its delighting “Chapel of Adam”. The “Chapel of Adam” is what connects information to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Then when Morgan Freeman visits Rome he speaks to the pope’s chief science representative, Messenger Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the pontifical Academy of Sciences, which dates all the way back to 1603. Also after visiting Rome Morgan Freeman then visits the Vatican Observatory in Vatican City.

When he arrives at the Vatican Observatory he goes and speaks with a priest astronomer whose field of study is “extra-galactic objects”. The priest astronomer talks to Freeman about how God is “the First Cause” who is outside of space and time and how God keeps the universe in existence. When Morgan Freeman visits Vatican City is plays a contemplative movement in the episode. As you can tell the documentary “Creation” with Morgan Freeman is very important and helps form along the ideas of a creation myth.

Why hello there to all of my favorite grandchildren out there. I have some very important information to tell you all about our ancestors. As all of us know, most of our background knowledge and information come from the Chinese culture. The Chinese culture is a very important culture to know and understand, especially since this information is from your ancestors. Chinese mythology is very diverse and different just how the country China is. As all of us know China contains many different cultural groups that all speak different languages. Most of the Chinese mythology is based off of animism, which means that the people see our land as alive and growing. Also on our land there are to be many creatures, such as animals and humans, and to show how playful the gods are.

Our cultural beliefs are based off of religious faiths and philosophies. So kids let’s get to the fun part which is the story of our beliefs of our culture. In the beginning there was darkness everywhere, and Chaos ruled. Pangu-within the darkness there formed an egg, and inside the egg the giant Pangu came into being. Pangu slept and grew inside the egg. Then he had grown so big inside of the egg, that he egg cracked. The lighter parts of the egg floated upwards to form the heavens and the denser parts sank downwards, to become the earth. And so was formed earth and sky, Yin and Yang.Pangu saw what had happened and he was pleased. But he feared that heaven and earth might meld together again, so he placed himself between them, his head holding up the sky and his feet firmly upon the earth. Pangu continued to grow at a rate of ten feet a day for 18,000 years, so increasing the distance between heaven and earth, until they seemed fixed and secure, 30,000 miles apart. Now exhausted, Pangu went back to sleep and never woke up.Pangu died, and his body went to make the world and all its elements. The wind and clouds were formed from his breath, his voice was thunder and lightning, his eyes became the sun and moon, his arms and his legs became the four directions of the compass, and his trunk became the mountains. His flesh turned into the soil and the trees that grow on it, his blood into the rivers that flow and his veins into paths men travel. His body hair became the grass and herbs, and his skin the same, while precious stones and minerals were formed from his bones and teeth. His sweat became the dew and the hair of his head became the stars that trail throughout heaven.

As for the parasites on his body, these became the divers races of humankind. Although Pangu is dead, some people still say that he is responsible for what the weather does each day, depending one if he is in a good or bad mood that day. This tale that I just told all of you is a legendary tale that all families pass down to their children and grandchildren. I hope you all may have learned an important lesson about how you were created and born into this world from past generations! Remember that everyday you live is a gift, so make the most out of everyday!
