1. Truth: “As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities. ” (Ch. 1 p. 13) 1. Stephanie Crawford is talking to Jem about what Boo had done. She says that Boo stabbed his dad with scissors and carried on with his activities innocently. This quote is significant because, it shows how fearless and evil Boo Radley can be towards anybody. This makes the reader think that Boo is just a kid who cares nothing of his actions, he may seem innocent but as everybody knows he can be very dangerous. . Truth: “The sheriff hadn’t the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement. ” (Ch. 1 p. 14) 2. Stephanie Crawford is still talking to Jem here about what happened to Boo after the stabbing. She says that instead of being put into jail with the African Americans he was just locked inside of a room by himself. This quote is important because, is shows that people care for one another at least a little bit when they are the same skin ton but, if it was a black man that did it he would have been put into jail.
This makes the reader see how they treated one another based on skin tone. 3. Rumor: “When peoples azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them. ” (Ch. 1 p. 10) 3. This is one of the rumors that Jem and Scout had heard from people around the neighborhood. They are basically saying whatever he breathed on ended up dying. This quote shows significance because they are referring to him as a demon child, every little crime in the town was his fault, and everything that died was also his fault. This makes the reader think that Boo is a very deadly child that is to be blamed for everything. . Rumor: “Radley pecans would kill you. ” (Ch. 1 p. 11) 4. This is a rumor that everyone talks about in the little town of Maycomb. They say that there is a pecan tree that the Radley’s have and nobody will eat the pecans because, everybody think they are deadly and the last person that ate one got terribly ill. This quote shows that even when the Radley’s aren’t trying to hurt anybody, they still do. This shows the reader that all around the Radley’s are a terrible family that everybody is afraid of and too scared to confront them. 5.
Walter Cunningham: “but if Walter and I had put ourselves in her shoes we’d seen it was an honest mistake on her part. (Ch. 3 Pg. 40) 5. This is Scout talking about Miss. Caroline and what her and Walter could have realized when she tried giving him a quarter. Earlier that day Miss. Caroline tried to give Walter a quarter for lunch but he denied it because he knew he wouldn’t be able to repay her. This quote resembles the theme that Atticus had said about putting yourself inside of their shoes. This shows the reader that the kids are still immature and don’t realize what Miss.
Caroline was so confused about when trying to help Walter. 6. Boo: “Anybody who went up to the house once oughta not to still run every time he passes it. ”(Ch. 3 Pg. 31) 6. Here Scout is making fun of Jem, because earlier in the story he was dared to touch the Radley house and he did after days of thinking it through. This quote is significant because, it reveals that even after trying to face their fear of the Radley’s they still are terrified, just by walking past it sends a shrivel through their body. This shows the reader that Jem is still scared by the Radley’s it’s like the Radley’s have a curse over them. . Mrs. Dubose “Don’t you say hey to me ugly girl! You say good afternoon, Mrs. Dubose. (Ch. 11 Pg. 133) 7. Here Scout is talking to herself on the response she thought she would get if she tried to talk to Mrs. Dubose. Here she thinks Mrs. Dubose is just an old ill woman that loves to get in people’s heads. This quote is important because it shows how scout thinks Mrs. Dubose acts when she might not you just say hello and try to ignore the rest. The reader is shown that Mrs. Dubose is a cruel woman with no love but to hate everybody who tried to be nice and show gratitude towards her. 8.
To kill a mockingbird: “They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. ”(Ch. 10 Pg. 118) 8. Miss Maudie is talking to Scout about mockingbirds and how it is a sin to kill them, because all they do is sing and nothing is wrong with that. This quote is important because it shows those if something is doing nothing wrong then don’t worry about it and mind your own business. Also shows the reader that the people in Maycomb are very laidback and mind their own business if you don’t mess with them they do their best not to mess with you. 9.
Atticus: “ Atticus did not drive a dump-truck for the county, he was not the sheriff, he did not farm, work in a garage, or do anything that could possibly arouse the admiration of anyone. ” (Ch. 10 Pg. 118) 9. This is Scout talking to herself about how lazy her father was and how he didn’t do anything but sit at home. This quote is important because it show how scout feels about her father, she thinks he is just like a bump on a log and that he just sits around without anything to do but read. This shows the reader that Scout loves her father but she can’t brag about him at school so he is kind of a lame father. 0. Atticus: “Well now Miss Jean Louise still think your father can’t do anything? Still ashamed of him? ” (Ch. 10 Pg. 129) 10. This is Miss Maudie asking Scout if she still thought her dad was lame after figuring out that he was the best marksman in town. This quote is very important because it makes scout think differently about her father, now she can brag about him just like the kids at school brag about their fathers. This shows the reader that Scouts emotions can be changed by such a little action as her father being a marksman of great skill.
