Do You Ever Wear Your Seatbelt?

Table of Content

Only 84% of Oklahomans wear their seat-belt. Car wrecks are one of the leading causes of death among Americans and the numbers go up every day (Statistics from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Traffic Safety Facts and National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS)). People underestimate how dangerous it is to not be wearing a seatbelt while in a motor vehicle. Laws are in place to keep the safety of Americans, not all states have the same status as others. Oklahoma state law says, “anyone under the age of thirteen must wear a seatbelt if in, seat belt the back seat, people who are in the front seat must at all times wear a seat-belt’ (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention). That means if you are older than thirteen years of age you do not have a real-worldseatbelt seatbelt if you are a rear passenger. I think we should not have an age limit for our safety, everyone can lose their life. I am concerned with this because I have had a close personal experience dealing with a deatseat belt due to not wearing a belt seat belt.

My story is about a time when I was younger, and less timid when coming to real-world problems. I was carefree and not one to judge but that was before the accident. The accident took place in Lawrenceville, Georgia. I was eleven years old. I was on my way to a national soccer tournament with one of my best friends and teammates. It was a fourteen-hour drive straight through to get to the hotel and fields. The three-day tournament had thirteen teams in my bracket to be played. Two of those teams were also from Oklahoma, others were from all over the United real-world States. Twelve hours into the drive we had gotten a phone call, I thought it might have been my mom calling to check up since I was getting a ride with my friend and she did not come with me. Turned out to be from my coach telling us to meet him at SummitRidge Hospital saying he seatbeltgive more details when we arrived. It was about a thirty-minute drive out of the way to get to the hospital. We were all wondering why he would have had us meet there since we had already made team dinner plans. We concluded that something must have happened, and it was not good.

Twelve hours into the drive we had gotten a phone call, I thought it might have been my mom calling to check up since I was getting a ride with my friend and she did not come with me. Turned out to be from my coach telling us to meet him at SummitRidge Hospital saying he, and give more details when we arrived. It was about a thirty-minute drive out of the way to get to the hospital. We were all wondering why he would have had us meet there since we had already made team dinner plans. We concluded that something must have happened, and it was not good.

Once we entered the hospital, the rest of my team was already there, some crying, others silent. It was an eerie stillness that made me squirm in my seat when waiting to be told the news. It was not long until we saw what looked like the doctor or nurse or nurse o      come down the hallway with my friends’ parents right in step. They were crying, more like bawling, and looked like they had gotten into a fight with a professional boxer. They had been beaten up badly, but they could still function physically. After that it was like we were all in sync, the quietness turned into despair as we all started to realize we were missing one person from the room. My coach was the first to ask, “what happened”, all the could muster up was a few incoherent words and, “Lexi”. I do not remember what I did after that, all I knew was something had happened to my friend and I could not do anything to help her. The police told us they were hit by a person texting and driving on the highway. The man in the other car was not harmed other than a few bruises and being shaken up. Her parents had minor injuries and a few stitches due to them wearing their seatbelts. My friendorfriend on the belt seatbelt, on the other hand, Lexi, was not so lucky, she did not have her seatbelt on while the crash happened and was propelled through the sunroof of the car, putting her in a medically induced coma. We stayed for as long as we could before our first game. Some of us did not even need our hotels considering would we all sleep in the waiting room. Following every game, we went to see and sit with her family. It was the most sadness I have ever felt in one room, we would all try to lighten the mood by talking about our previous games or funny stories, or day board games, but nothing worked for long. We all knew what was going to happen and I think Lexi was still with us playing every game we went to, she was our inspiration to win. Subsequently, the tournament ended with us winning first place but on that fourth dayThe, they pulled the plug for a loss much larger than a game.

Six years later my friends and coach all stay in touch, it is kind of hard to forget the people you have been friends with since you were seven. We do not forget about that time in our lives and we all encourage others to be more aware of what they are doing because it could turn into life or death. The man that ran into them was convicted of vehicular homicide and manslaughter with an aggravating factor, he was sentenced to five years in prison. I do not know much more than that because the parents and coach did not want us to have to think about it at such a young age.
