In today’s competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors.
Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task of goal setting and goal achievement.A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause.
Not by words, but by their actions is the way great leaders influence their followers. They do what they preach. We all have experienced leadership in our lives. From early childhood in our families to politics and government, and, especially in our work, we all recognize leadership in other people and often in ourselves.
An effective leader helps an organization to maximize their efficiency and to achieve goals. A great leader helps our nation in tough times and reunify the country.A parent as a good role model enables their children to grow healthy and become productive adults. I believe leadership is important to me, my organization and our society in many ways.

Leaders set a direction for the rest of us; they help us see what lies ahead and how to achieve it; they encourage and inspire us. Without a good leadership a group of human beings quickly degenerates into argument and conflict, because we all are different and see things in different ways.

Personal leadership helps us to determine our desires, strengths and abilities. It means Knowing what we want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those goals regardless of what other people think, say, or do.
Personal leadership helps us to make our present better and shape a good future. Good leadership is also important to run a business.Usually, in companies, management stresses more on decision- making skills. They believe a timely and smart decision will help their company to succeed.
They forget that implementation of those decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper implementation , there will be no results. Like there is a saying that, it’s easier to said than done. Similarly, making a decision will change nothing, its how to get things done in a timely and an effective way will help an organization to accomplish their goals.
Leadership is crucial in implementing decisions correctly and successfully. Each of us understand importance of leadership when it comes to our country. We all try to vote for the best person in elections because it matters who is in office. President make decisions concerning our lives, country, and the world.
As a nation, we place no greater responsibility on any one individual than we do on the president. Therefore, leadership plays a vital role. Worldview is the totality of our conception of what this complex, fragmented world is like.The perception we have about our self is part of our worldview.
What indicates our worldview is not necessarily how we react to individual events or specific situations, but the overall pattern or character of our lifestyle. Lifestyle is influenced by the level of maturity. The answer to important life issues will depend on an individual’s maturity level. It is generally recognized that lower levels of maturity exhibit extremely self-serving worldviews.
High level of maturity and positive worldview makes a person more strong, confident, determined , compassionate, honest and broad minded.These are all traits of a good leader. Therefore, having a positive worldview and high level of maturity will help an individual to become a great leader. A true leader is one who can lead people without controlling or forcing them.
The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. A key element to leadership success is the extent to which the leader and employee’s relationship is directed toward meeting one another’s developmental needs. Leaders should be complete followers.
They should have the best interests of those they serve in mind, and know them as they know themselves-how they think, feel, believe and behave; what they value, why they value it, and what are their greatest hopes and fears. Otherwise, their ability to serve is a charade. Leader should also have faith in their employees. People who believes in themselves are more likely to treat others with respect and do better in any task by making more of an effort, and persist longer, than those with poor self concept.
It is also important for a leader to have control over his/her emotions.Managers can’t ignore the fact that their employees are people, with real lives and emotions that impact how they think, feel, and act. Managers with emotional intelligence understand that their staff members are people first and workers second. Managers should treat their employees the way they want to be treated by others.
Becoming a good leader is not only about getting your job done, but more importantly, earning the respect of your team. People usually percieve leadership role as an asy task. Even I used to think that a leader just tell people what to do and get paid for it.After taking this course, I have gain tremendous amount of knowledge about leadership skills.
It takes way more than giving oders to your employees and get work done to be a good leader. A good leader is the one who put everyone else first and do what helps them before thinking about him/her. One of the best ways to persuade and communicate with others is with your ears—by listening to them. A manager who doesn’t truly listen to employees won’t earn the respect of those employees or even truly know what’s going on in the organization.
Lot of work related issues, complaints and conflict can be resolved just by “ listening”. Therefore, communication skills are very important. A leader should be ready to listen to their employees. It might seems easier to do but its really hard to listen.
You have to be patience and ready to find a solution. Secondly, a good leader should operate with a steady moral, professional, emotional compass. They should not blow every which way the wind blows but bend when necessary and stay flexible enough to adjust to changing circumstances.Thus, a leader should be flexible and ready to handle situation according to the circumstances.
I personally preferred Collective – Participative decision making style to make decisions, handle conflicts and to communicate with employees. Every employee have unique strengths that they bring to the company. Therefore, by involving team members in a healthy discussion will help to discover other perspectives of the situation. This will also make employees feel appreciated because their opinions are given importance.
The understanding that I have gained from self assessment is consistent with servant leadership theory.A successful leader is one who put their employee in best position possible to accomplish the common goal of the organization. Servant leadership theory implies the same that a manager should serve their employees before him. The idea of servant leadership is servant first.
Servant leadership is an increasingly popular concept that fuses being a servant with being a leader. Servant leadership is founded upon the Christian faith and believes that servant leadership is simply following the character of Lord into a management model.I believe Christian values are equally antecedents of servant leadership than the values of other belief systems. For example, Hinduism .
Bharavaad-Gita (holy book of Hindus) teaches that those following the Hindu beliefs should be characterized by compassion and generosity, avoidance of immorality, the will to give, and the will to serve. Indian freedom fighter, Mahatama Gandhi is an example of servant leader. All his life, he was more devoted to serve the people of India rather than engaging in command-control leadership styles.I believe every religion in world teaches servant leadership but it’s the people who interprets the things differently.
Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges support servant leadership theory. They run an organization known as Lead Like Jesus It had a very precise and profound message for the leaders of organization, churches schools or anyone who influenced the thinking, behavior, or development of someone else–LEAD LIKE JESUS. Lead like Jesus is transforming leaders into servant leaders of true greatness. Relationship leadership theory supports servant leadership.
Leaders who practice relationship style management focus on the performance of group members, but also want each person to fulfill his or her potential. In other words, this theory focus upon the connections formed between leaders and followers. Gita can be seen as a concrete example of Servant-Leadership. Gita is a holy text of Hindus and one of the world’s oldest known text.
The manuscript, believed by Hindus represents an early form of the Western theory of servant leadership. In Bharavaad Gita, Lord Krishna’s leadership style fits both the servant-leader and the transformational models of leadership based on situational contingencies.
