This paper will discuss my academic plan for my pursuit of a Bachelor’s of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering. Although I have been unable to download the calendar plan that was described in class I will outline my class schedule starting the spring semester 2008 until I graduate. As a start I would to explain my unique situation. While I was an active duty Marine I began taking distance education classes. Through the course of my classes through Central Texas Community CollegeI was under the impression I was taking all my required general education requirements.
Once I completed my transfer paperwork to KirkwoodI soon found out my classes would count for very little towards my degree. In addition my military experience, some of which is ACE accredited, will also only be accountableas elective courses. In all I have nine (9) credits I can transfer for my humanities and social sciences. The remaining thirty-three (33) will simply be marked as electives and most likely not be used. My goal while at Kirkwood is to complete all the transferable classes towards my BS and then transfer to the University of Iowa.
While it may be possible to achieve an Associates of Science with the extra elective credits I have, I will not go out of my way to obtain it before I transfer. Below will be my semester schedule until graduation. The summer semester information is based Kirkwood’s 2007 Summer Catalog. One other note, after a conversation with Mario Meza, I will attempt to retake my Compass placement exam in an attempt to test into Calculus I to speed my transfer. Spring 2008 Summer 2008 Fall 2008 Spring 2009 Summer 2009 Fall 2009 Spring 2010 This marks my transfer to the University of Iowa.
I have spoke with the Megan Allen in the transfer office for the College of Engineering. She is aware of my situation. Fall 2010 Spring 2011 Fall 2011 Spring 2012 The entire time I am pursuing my degree I will be a Mechanical Engineer Co-op/Intern at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, IA. When I was hired on they understood the length of time it is going to take me to obtain my degree. They have been very supportive and understanding so far. I have learned a great deal about Mechanical Engineers from my many coworkers and the projects we have been working on. I look forward to continued employment once my degree is complete.
