The criminal justice system is made up of three components: police, courts, and corrections. When a crime is committed, an investigation takes place, leading to an arrest and booking of the suspect. The suspect awaits their first appearance before a judicial officer who informs them of their charges, rights, sentencing, and bail if applicable.
