I Am Looking Forward To Going Into The Pharmacy Field To Pursue My Dreams

I was always fascinated by the sciences, but I didn’t take the most direct route to get to where I am today. I went from growing up in China to enrolling in university in Seoul, South Korea. After university I traveled to the United States to pursue my now realized love for the sciences. After traveling across the world, I hope to eventually go into the pharmacy field to continue pursuing my dreams of learning more about the sciences and using that knowledge to help others. As a student, I am forever learning, and so far, I would like to say I’ve learned a great deal through my experiences.

After completing high school, I wanted to explore the world. I traveled to Seoul, South Korea to study communications at Sungkyunkwan University. I took a leap of faith by forcing myself to learn a new language in a different culture, and didn’t look back. I learned much from my four years of study in Korea, and after graduation I was able to start an internship at a local television station. Nevertheless, I felt I was missing out on my full potential. After speaking with friends and family, I eventually took another leap and flew to the United States and found myself settling in the northeast. A few years ago, I started taking science classes at a local community college in central Pennsylvania, and this was when I discovered that I truly enjoyed learning about the sciences, progressing from chemistry to biology to the later anatomy and physiology classes.

These days, I work as a pharmacy technician and rotate between several different Rite Aids in the area. Their locations span from the heart of downtown to the surrounding suburbs. I can identify the different patient populations unique to each site. I enjoy interacting with patients and doing my best to assist them with their insurance issues, while making sure they are able to obtain their prescriptions in a timely manner. I also greatly appreciate each pharmacist I work with who are able to take the time away from their busy workdays to teach me.

As part of a patient’s health network, pharmacists are not only useful in dispensing medications, but is also a key team member of a patient’s medical care as well supplying education in their care. The pharmacists I work with have all displayed empathy, knowledge, and professionalism in their roles in health care. Working with them have allowed me to enjoy my role in the community to care for our neighbors, and have taught me valuable skills in customer service as well as techniques in preparing prescriptions.

When I’m not working, I have been teaching myself how to play the piano and learn photography. I also cooking and trying new recipes. I especially enjoy making soups because even if I’m trying to make a new soup for the first time, I find it rather hard to make a bad tasting soup. All of these hobbies do require attention to detail, but also allow me to express my creativity freely.

Throughout my life I’ve taken a few leaps of faith. Knowing what I know now, I would not take any of my experiences back. I feel that my experiences only have served to enrich me and prepare me for the next step in my journey to learn and help others. My experiences through living in three different countries, work in various pharmacy settings, and educations from various college settings with local and international student bodies have shaped me into who I am today. I can that for the next step, I see pharmacy as a field where I will have purpose and one that I look forward to.
