This report is for the Minister of Consumer Affairs and will provide supplementary information about this growing industry. 1. 2Background The mobile phone is one of the most beneficial tools in our modern society, not only for business adults but for the students.

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our everyday life, it is said that everyone wants to have one, and almost a quarter already have one (Downie and Glazebrook,February2007,P. 1) Indeed, in a recent PEW INTERNETSURVEY found that not only the adults but also students have mobile phones. The usage of mobile phones has increased ,75% of 12-17 year-olds now own cell phones, up from 45% in 2004 (Paige Brown ,June 12, 2012,P. 1). Students are using the mobile phones to communicate with their friends, play games, and listen to music. Thus the mobile phone has becomes a necessary part of the students’ life.

Because mobile phone can connect with the internet, so it is a good and convenient method for students to research useful information for their essays and reports, and it is also a wonderful way for them to make conversations with relatives and friends. There are, however, not only positive effects of mobile usage but also some bad effects. It is not only good to students but also to the industry. This report consists of four sections. The Introduction . Section 1 is followed by the method section which describes how the research was conducted. The results of the research are presented in Section 3, Results and Discussion. The Conclusion is a summary of the results which were found. 2. METHOD 2. 1Secondary sources Some data was found from some e-books and e-articles from Deakin University Library.

Academic online information was researched using common Google tools. Numerous research reports were studies to provide valuable information on this topic. Five documents are cited in this report which provided essential information for the development of the questionnaire. 2. 2 Primary sources 2. 2. 1Subjects Twenty citizens of Melbourne were asked to participate in a questionnaire entitled: Students Usage of Mobile Phones. The questionnaire took approximately ten minutes per a survey. 20 local Australia were selected to answer to the questionnaire. The respondents’ ages are all ranging from 12-30. 2. 2.

2Questionnaire To begin with, our group theme was discussed. Then a draft of the questionnaire was made from information which was found on the internet. Next, the questionnaire was given to teacher to check the exactitude of the questionnaire, followed by the feedback, this questionnaire was tasted on other students in another class. The questionnaire consisted of 12 questions including yes/no, multiple choice and 2open questions. These questions are helpful to collect the information. 2. 2. 3Procedure for administering the questionnaire and collating the results In Chadstone, the interviews were undertaken.

8 – 10 minutes were spent on each questionnaire and the survey was completed in one day. After the collection of the results, the most important information was selected. The data was analysed and collated on excel. The results and discussion of research is presented in the following section. 3. Results and Discussion 3. 1 Figure 1. The Reasons of Buying Mobile Phone [pic] Figure 1 presents the reasons why students buy mobile phones. From this pie chart, we can know that the majority of people who were interviewed chose the reason of social, take the part of 70%. While students who buy phone for pleasure is just 5%.

Next is the reason of work, with 15%, there is also some students who buy phone for safety, take the part of 10%. Through this picture, it can be draw a conclusion that the social reason is the most important part, with 70%. Maybe students who have a mobile phone want to connect with their parents and friends to enhancing emotion and social interaction. On may dare say that it is convenient to have a mobile phone. Moreover, the respondents who chose the work are 15%. This is maybe because some students not only have a part-time job, but also they have to keep contact with their employee to know the information about work.

Or maybe respondents have to keep in touch with other employers. So respondents can go to work together and help each other. However, there are also respondents who chose the reason of pleasure, with 5%. Maybe these students want to relax themselves. Maybe these respondents have plenty of work to do when respondents have free time. So they are listening music and play games by phone. Furthermore, for the reason of safety, maybe these students are too young to protect themselves and their parents worry about their safety. Therefore, parents want to keep in contact with them.

3. 2 Figure 2. The First Choice of Buying Mobile Phone [pic] Figure 2 shows us the elements when students buy mobile phones. It can be seen that most students take the price as the first choice. Only one student thinks that the brand is important. The students who chose the multiple functions and the quality are approximately the same( 5 students and 6 students). From this bar graphs, it shows that the element of price occupy the biggest part, with 40%. This is because that the interviewers are students. Moreover, they do not have a job.

So respondents can not afford an expensive mobile phone or maybe their parents think they need not have one. In contrast, the number who chose the brand is just one. Take 5%part. Maybe this part of student has a wealthy family and students do not care too much of money. Therefore,student can buy anything they want. The reason why they value the brand may be is that they want to show off themselves and want other students admire them. About 25% students chose the multiple functions maybe they have kinds of needs. Furthermore, a mobile phone with multiple functions is convenient for them.

As can be seen, the quality is also important. The percentage of 30% of students value the quality. Maybe these students want to use a long time and they hate it that their mobile phone has something wrong. Therefore, the most important is that using a long time can help them to save money. 3. 3 Figure 3. Favourite Function about Mobile Phone [pic] Figure 3 tells us what students do when they use their mobile phone. The pie chart shows that Communication is the most popular thing for students to use mobile phone, with52%. What Followed by is listening music, with13%. The

percentages of playing online games, searching information are the same, both take part of 9%. Taking photos occupies the minimal part, the percentage is only 4%. And others are 13%. From above, it shows that the percentage of communicating with others occupy the biggest part. This is because that using a mobile phone can shorten student’s distance and time. Maybe they need not to spend time to find the person who they want. In contrast, the percentage of taking photos is only 4%. The flash has a banned range and it can not illuminate everything in a view if you are taking a landscape shot (Rawlinson, 2012,p 26).

Maybe student can take photos from another way . The percentages of playing games and searching information on mobile phone are 13%. It is possible that students can find information with other methods or maybe their mobile phones do not have this function. And they might not like playing online games or maybe they want to protect their mobile phone. This is because playing online games can lose too much electric power and it is bad to their mobile phones. Listening music takes the second biggest part, maybe when they have a mobile phone and they need not have another way to listen music.

So the convenience of mobile phone. And maybe these students like listening to music. Therefore, no doubt this function is their favourite. 3. 4 Figure 4. From this table, we can see clearly that most students can not imagine occupied about 70%. While about 30% of students can live without mobile phone. There was a survey shows that it is hard to imagine any teenager willingly giving up their mobile phone or computer for a week. For some students from Brentwood Secondary College’s environmental science class, going without their phones, laptops, televisions, Wiis, iPods and other screen devices until 5pm on Friday will be a huge challenge – like learning to communicate all over again (Brady, 2011,P. 1).

Maybe for them, they feel they lose contact with their friends and the world. This is because they can not know what happened on timely and they can not search the information as soon as possible. There are also 6 people said yes. Maybe they have another way to instead of mobile phone. 3. 5 Figure 5. The Age of Having a Mobile Phone [pic] Figure 5 displays the age of having a mobile phone. The highest one is the ages between 20 -24, with almost 60%. In contrary, the ages between 12-15 and 24-30 are lower, both5%. the second biggest part is the ages between 16-19, with 30%

Almost three-fifths of the 20 to 24 age group have a phone. This is because they are independent and they can find a kind of work to support their phone fee. Moreover, they can make use of the advantages of mobile phone and they can control themselves. In contrast, the interviewers who aged 12-15 years old take part only 5%, maybe their parents do not allow them to have one and mobile phone can distract their concentration. This is because they are too young to control themselves. Furthermore, 30 percent was occupied by ages between 16-19.

Maybe most of them have left home to study. Therefore, they need a phone to connect with their family. 4. Conclusion. To sum up, the result of this investigation shows the characters of using mobile phone of students. Firstly, most students buy mobile phone for social things and little part is for work and pleasure. Secondly, most students value the element of price and some take the quality as their first choice when they buy a mobile phone. Thirdly, a biggest part of students like to use mobile phone to communication with others. However, some like listening music.

Fourthly, most students can not imagine their life without a mobile phone, it suggests that people can not left their phone. Finally, the percent which aged 20 to 24 is biggest use mobile phone. Therefore, people can get a lot of information from the five figures about students how to use the mobile phone and what do they usually do. As can be seen, mobile phone has become a necessary tool for students. Moreover, they could do a lot of things with phone. Having a mobile phone is very convenient for them, because they can keep contact with others and know the news on timely.
