Personality disorder - Disorder Essay Example
I have chosen to write about personality disorders, because I have a personal insight on some of these disorders - Personality disorder introduction. My daughter and my mother both have borderline personality disorder. In chapter 12 page 412 it states that people despite having certain characteristic views of the world and ways of doing things, people normally can adjust their behavior to fit a difficult situation. But some people, starting at some point early in life, develop inflexible and maladaptive ways of thinking and behaving that are so exaggerated and rigid that they cause serious distress to themselves or problems to others. People with such personality disorders range from harmless eccentrics to cold-blooded killers. All of these disorders can be treated with therapy and medication. Schizoid personality disorder is a type of personality disorder that is characterized by the inability or desire to form social relationships and have no warm or tender feelings for others.
These people tend to be “loners”. They are often unable to express their feelings and seem to be distant or appear to be cold towards other people. These people often never marry and have trouble holding jobs that require them to interact with other people. When I think of this personality I think of the character Sheldon on “The Big Bang Theory”, he is often distant with emotion towards the other characters in the show. He is a scientist in which his character researches the physics and rarely has interaction with other people. The opposite of this personality is avoidant personality disorder. This person wants to have close relationships with others. But it also can lead to isolation. Paranoid personality disorder is another personality disorder. They often will see their thinking as rational and objective, yet they are guarded. In chapter 12 it states that these type of people are secretive, devious, scheming and argumentative.

They are suspicious and mistrustful and even when there is no reason to be; they are hypersensitive to any possible threat or tricks; and refuse to accept blame or criticism even when deserved. I think that with this disorder it can be found in a number of people with other disorders. For example people with bipolar can often be paranoid about other people thinking ill of them or their actions. I have never in countered anyone with paranoid personality disorder. Narcissistic personality disorders are often characterized as dramatic, emotional, or erratic behavior. Chapter 12 gives an example of this person displaying a grandiose sense of self-importance and a preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success. These people often behave as if they are extraordinary, need constant attention and admiration. I see this in my mother in-law. She is constantly doing things for attention. She will do something nice for someone with the intention of them showing her tons of admiration. I know this because she has actually said she does it for the attention. Utah has a holiday tradition where you donate your time; buy stuff to decorate a tree, wreath, or other items.
The larger items like the trees are put in a silent auction and the money is donated to Primary Children’s Hospital. She actually told me that she wants her name on the tree so that everyone will know that she did this beautiful tree and will think she is a fabulous decorator. Not that she does it for the kids or families that cannot pay for their hospital treatments. I never realized there was a name for it until now. Borderline personality disorder has personally touched my life. In chapter 12 page 413 it states that people with borderline personality disorder is characterized by marked instability in self-image, mood and interpersonal relationships. People with this personality disorder tent to act impulsively and often, self-destructively. They often feel uncomfortable being alone and often manipulate self-destructive impulse in an effort to control or solidify their personal relationship. My mom was professionally diagnosed with this in 2006. She tried to kill herself because she was caught cheating on my step-dad. She was on her 4th marriage and had to justify her actions to him. Instead she diverted everyone’s attention by attempting suicide and distracting us all on her safety. This is when her doctor diagnosed her with this disorder.
Through the years I have watched her self- destruct over and over. As a child of someone with this disorder I often feel as if I am the parent. One day a few months ago I was humiliated when she publically posted on her Facebook page that she was done with life and going to swallow a bunch of pills with vodka. My brother unfortunately has to deal with this on a more regular basis because they life in California and me being in Utah puts distant between us. It has also stopped him from moving back to Utah. He is afraid that leaving her alone out there will ultimately push her overboard and she will self-destruct. As a mother of a child with this disorder I see it a whole different way on this side. Last year almost to the day my daughter tried to kill herself right in front of me. She grabbed a handful of pills and swallowed them. She and I were in the middle of a huge fight. She was caught stealing her 5th or 6th ipod from school. I told her that I was calling the cops to turn her in. She was trying to deflect my attention from the theft to her safety.
It worked we all devoted our attention to her not her behavior. She was all but happy when her dad and I institutionalized her for a week. I was not going to deal with my mother on a more personal level and let my daughter be sent home. She needed to learn the magnitude of her actions. It’s been a year and have, had no further problems with stealing or suicide attempts. But I often see the behavior sneak out with her relationships with boys.
