I attended the COS Theatre Department production of Picasso At The Lapin Agile written by Steve Martin. The play Picasso At The Lapin Agile, is a comedy that was adapted by James McDonnell and Schyler Mayo in the fashion of a long running Off Broadway historic comedy play. The setting takes plays in a bar called Lapin Agile in 1904 but two characters have discovered great ideas and can see themselves in the future.

The story line follows in which the play begins at the cafe (R.L. Preheim who is known as Freddy) is the owner and bartender of the Lapin Agile. (Tom Nance who is known as Gaston) plays the role as an older man in the play and always made the audience laugh every time he needed to use the bathroom. Gaston was the comedian of the play and was into finding love and sex.(Kayla Seffing who plays as Germaine) is Freddy’s girlfriend. (Brett Clevenger who plays as Albert Einstein) goes to Lapin Agile to meet a woman whom he describes with long hair (Bella O’Keefe who plays as the countess). Natalie Ezelle who plays Suzanne) goes to Lapin Agile to meet (Picasso who is played by Uriah Madrid). Suzanne tells the people at the bar that Picasso told her to meet him there and he drew her drawing but didn’t sign it. (Sagot whom is played by Jennifer Powers) is Picasso’s art dealer and wants to buy that drawing that Suzanne has from Picasso. (Alex Cardoza who plays Schmendiman) is a guy who really doesn’t know anything and (Haley Ruth Spencer is a female who admires) Schmendiman.

A visitor comes from the future who is played by (Chandler Fairfield). The visitor let’s Picasso and Albert Einstein know that in the future they will both be famous for the things they are professional at. James McDonnell and Schyler Mayo, the directors of Picasso At The Lapin Agile did a good job conducting the play. The way the actors acted out in the play was very creative. The work and time the directors put into the play is seen by what an amazing job they did. Also the way they have included Picasso and Albert Einstein and the impact they have on the twentieth century is incredible. Picasso is known for his art work and Einstein for science. The two characters that acted out as Picasso and Einstein were ready to act during the performance. The way that the directors of the play put Picasso and Einstein together is unique. The directors also added Schemediamen who is a designer thinks he is a brilliant genius but in reality he doesn’t know anything .

A guy who is not named during the play but is known as “the visitor” comes and basically that’s when they all know that all of their brilliant ideas are important in the 20th century. The way the play was performed shows the audience that the director worked very hard in the making of the play. The idea of the characters meeting at the bar was a very creative and unique idea. The costume that the characters were wearing were very beautiful and elegant. The costumes resembled the clothing of 1904. When the lighting was used it would symbolizes which character was on stage. For example, in the end of the play when “the visitor” comes the lighting was on Albert Einstein and Picasso. That was a symbol meaning that these two characters are on stage and the importance behind why the lighting was on them. It is because both of their ideas are important in the 20th century. Another example is when “the visitor” first comes into the play. The lighting and sound caught the audience attention. It’s as if he came down from the sky. In the play, the drinks that the characters would drink is one of the props. The drawing that Picasso drew for Suzane is also another prop. In the end of the play, when they took the group picture, was also containing a prop. The props used in the play made it more realistic and caught the audience’s attention.

The characters performed really well, but the one that stood out to me was Gaston. Gaston was the comedian of the play. He made the audience laugh from the things he said. For example, he would interrupt and say “ I have to go pee” which always made the audience laugh. Gaston stood out to me because he was older than all of the the other characters. During the play he talked about how he wanted to did love and how it’s been a while since he had sex. Gaston would look at every female characters that came to Lapin Agile. When Suzanne came into the bar and told them she’s meeting Picasso there and she changed her shirt. She told everyone to look away except for Gaston. Gaston was checking her out when she was changing and that made the audience laugh. Tom Nance who is the actor playing Gaston did an amazing job performing on stage. The sense of humor that Tom has during the play caught my eyes. The fact he’s older than all the other characters and also has a problem which was needing to pee almost after every drink made me stand out to the audience.

Overall, he did a great job on his part. In summary, the play Picasso At The Lapin Agile was an awesome play. It was a very unique type of comedy. All the designers such as Mason Beltran Garcia, James McDonnell, Steve Lamar, and Nick Terry worked very hard in putting this amazing play together. They all did a great job on their part. All in all, I was really impressed at how the all the designs were put together. It was an actual bar on stage and that was very impressing on how all the designers contributed to the making of the play.Ulyaa Shaibi Play: Picasso At The Lapin Agile Author: Steven Martin Director: James McDonnell & Schyler Mayo Scenic Designer: Mason Beltran Garcia Costume Designer: James McDonnell Lighting Designer: Steve Lamar Sound Designers: Nick Terry Performance Date: 11/18/18 Producing Organization: COS Theatre Department Theatre Space: COS Theatre On November 18, I attended the COS Theatre Department production of Picasso At The Lapin Agile written by Steve Martin.
