Media violence is typically unrealistic, simplistic, glorified and even presented as humorous. Despite the debate the subject of violence on television has generated, television has been labeled a culprit. But it is a sad fact that science has produced deadly weapons. The destruction they cause is frightening. Now machines & robots have replaced man everywhere causing unemployment in all places. People will also lose their economic security & self-respect.
Hence science is both a blessing & a curse to mankind August 6, 1945, is not a day to be forgotten. It marks the world’s first use of an atomic bomb, which was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the U. S. Military. Three days later, the United States dropped a second atom bomb on the city of Nagasaki bringing World War II to an end. In total, more than 140,000 people were estimated to be killed. Although the most memorable effects of the atomic bomb were the mass amounts of death, the development of the atomic bomb has greatly influenced American society and the world
After effects of radiation such as keloids, leukemia, cancer, and birth defects still appear even today The atomic bomb’s initial explosion may have been devastating, but it also had many after effects. Three days later, a 10,000 pound bomb, Fat Man, was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, resulting in 60 to 80 thousand deaths The exploitation of science can result in several disastrous consequences like nuclear wars, catastrophic pollution and ruinous bloodshed. The same science which has been of such great assistance to mankind has another face.
Science which has bestowed us with development, progress, expansion and growth has also brandished us with hostilities, destruction, violence, ruin, devastation, annihilation bloodshed, carnage and obliteration. Gone are the days when peace and tranquility used to prevail throughout the world. Today a gun booms in one corner of the world or another everyday. Wars are fought between countries for years and years together at a stretch. Families are torn apart and friends are lost forever, never to be reunited .
By giving birth to weaponry, warcraft and armaments it can be indisputably said that science is the root of battles, armed conflicts and international disputes. Thanks to science we are plunging headlong into an era of nuclear wars . But, this is paving the way for over-population and population explosion. This has resulted in mass deficiency of land. Today, due to this we are even auctioning of land on the moon! Machine guns, shells, submarines, the atom and hydrogen bombs can destroy the world in the twinkling of an eye.
Aeroplanes in war act as engines of mass destruction. Not only in times of war but in times of peace also man lives in the midst of disease. Though cures are being invented diseases are multiplying too. If the former is in arithmetic progression, the latter is in geometric progression. That is why peace lovers blame science as a curse. Today, the mankind is living under the shadow of sudden death. It appears that we have come to the end of our journey. Now we stand on the brink of complete and final destruction. The earth has become a dangerous place.
It may explode to pieces at any moment. Science has brought more fear and danger than hope and comfort. In the beginning, it appeared to be the greatest friend and helper of man The atom bomb wiped out Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It has broken up the established institutins. What has to accomplished? It has not ended poverty Science has developed such terrible weapons of war that in the next world war not a single man will escape death. It has made this earth a hell and man an insance devel. Of curse, there were wars and famines sometimes.
Science has, no doubt, made it possible to produce things in great quantities. The last two World Wars killed millions of people and destroyed many cities we remain in constant fear of mass destruction weapons invented by Science. Another disadvantage of science has been the misuse of mass media for propaganda. Sometimes information stories facts are blown out of proportion leading to tension among the masses. Much of communal tension withing the country has been the creation of media. Mass media is used by anti-social elements to spread rumours and false information.
Once a story is circulated, it spreads like a forest fire, thanks to mass media. We are in for making bombs, using nuclear energy for purposes of destruction. Today man has the most destructive weapons ever produced. One bomb can annihilate civilization. In the event of a third world war, there is no doubt that man will perish. It is at this aspect of scientific growth we must put a stop whose gain will it be, if the world is destroyed? I am sure it will benefit none. Yes, none at all. We must understand that we should not pursue the track that leads to annihilation.
All the gifts of science must be enjoyed to the full and that can happen only if man survives to taste the fruits of mechanization. Production of destructive weapons the greatest curse of science to men. On the home front also it is felt that, too much mechanization, accounts for our inability to work of our own self. We get so used to machines that our bodies get absolutely frozen and become unfit to do any work. Moving about all the time in cars makes our physique. This creeps several diseases. We become basically very lazy.
On the national front, mechanization has led to industrialization which, in turn has given birth to extensive unemployment and capitalism. Machines being devices to save labour, have mercilessly thrown thousand out of employment, and capitalism has led to class struggle, the big capitalists exploiting the poor labourers. At the lowest and smallest level of life, man has lost his own humaneness as though he himself has become a machine. He has got so enmeshed in the machines that the has lost all contact with his own species who make for his live company.
This live company has been sacrificed for the mechanical idiot box. Besides these mundane and down-to-earth results of scientific growth, there is one very important aspect which has got lost. Science leaves no place to accommodate God or religion. For the scientific and mechanical mind can understand only what he sees or, something that can be explained with some amount of reasoning. God and religion are two things that can have no mathematical formulae to explain. Today’s man cannot understand this so called foolish premise of the existence of any God.
This disbelief in God is leading to further degeneration of the family and the society This irreligious attitude of man is further bringing down to the lowest ebb, the sensitivity of our very beings. The abuses are so great that they even pose the danger of complete annihilation of the human race, both physically and mentally and of course spiritually. Looking at the sum total of the scenario the abuses outnumber the blessings. This is because man is basically destructive by nature and getting too much of scientific know-how will only confirm his doom.
