Introduction
My name is Nikhil Morar, and I’m a senior at the University of Tennessee. I live in a town called Burns, which is about 45 minutes west of Nashville, Tennessee. I am graduating with the class of 2019 this May from the Haslam College of Business. I am a full-time student majoring in Business Analytics with a collateral in Supply Chain Management. My past professional experiences include being a barista for Starbucks, a student operator for the University of Tennessee’s Telefund, and a data collector for Advantage Solutions. These past experiences have taught me a lot in different fields of study. Currently, I intern for the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services. I verify, update, and enter data into a proprietary database using a simple web interface. The data may be located by calling customers, reviewing social media websites, or reviewing customer websites. I also assist with researching and documenting Tennessee workforce development resources. My future professional plan includes working for a professional sports team for a sports analytics position. The knowledge gained from the University of Tennessee and hopefully a future graduate school will put me in place to achieve my professional job in years to come. Just within the past year, I decided to pursue my minor in Information Studies and Technology. This minor requires a lot of information science classes. My interest in this minor is my passion for web programming, learning different types of programming languages, and the study of processes for storing and retrieving information.
Learning Style
After taking the questionnaire, I got a result of 9 in active learning, 7 in sensing learning, 9 in visual learning, and 3 in global learning. Throughout my academic career, I have always known that I was an active learner. I understand and retain material better when I engage with it rather than just listening and memorizing it. It has been fairly easy for me to demonstrate a process and apply it to a real world situation, and I think that this form of learning is centered toward group discussions and reflections. This questionnaire also made me understand why I am more of a sensing learner rather than an intuitive learner. I would rather have facts given to me instead of different possibilities, and I am a very detail orientated person. I like to learn things that I know I will be able to use in the future and have a strong realtion to the real world. It is easy for me to understand material that has a real life example associated with it. Another learning style that I was familiar with from the beginning was the visual style. I have always understood graphs and diagrams better than just reading out of a book. This technique helps me comprehend material that is laid out in front of me. It is also helpful for others with this learning style if they are showed how to do something rather than just telling them what to do. Lastly, based on this questionnaire I am a global learner as well. I understand concepts first, and then I figure out the details. I also learn better in groups rather than working solitarily, and I see the big picture first. With these learning types, it is easy to see how different learners would approach information creation. Some may prefer to work alone while completing a task, while others may like to take in other people’s ideas first. Some may like to work on one thing at once, while others may choose to work on one task at a time. This questionnaire helped me understand that individuals learn differently based on how their learning styles vary. It is important to realize who your audience is before trying to teach them a task or a concept.
Personal Dialect Map
My experience in taking the dialect quiz was very positive, and I was shocked to see how accurate the results were. The quiz gave me the exact area from where I am from and where I currently live. When I first started taking this quiz, I thought that the results would show the region that I am from; however, this quiz was very specific. The questions that this quiz offered were very detailed, especially since there were many different options to choose from. I think that this played a key role in identifying where I am from. I think that where you are from and the dialect that you are familiar with has a great influence when it comes to communicating with others or visiting new places; however, when it comes to analyzing search results it may not influence it as much. Technology has advanced throughout the years, and it is easy to figure out what a word means with just a press of a button. With computers we are given the opportunity to search for results and publications that have been written across the world. While dialect is important to understand, it is also important to understand that research can be done from anywhere, and it is easy to comprehend what is being said.
Learning Outcomes
After the completion of this course I hope to achieve many learning goals that I have not achieved in my previous classes. I believe that this class will give me many skills that I can use in my future endeavors. I hope to learn how to evaluate and assess information systems and services in many different environments. I also hope to learn how to apply the theories of organizational behavior and structure in a real life setting. I also would like to learn how to use research effectively by conducting, interpreting, and taking action based upon various studies and evaluations. Because these goals are personalized, I will be more aware of what I hope to learn by the end of this course.
