What words do you think of that associated with America? Equality? Liberty? Justice for all? Now think of The Electoral College. A once-functioning system that is now severely flawed. What words do you associate with it? Unfair? Biased? Problematic? While the system once worked well, it no longer serves our nation’s needs, The Electoral College is fundamentally flawed and it undermines the ideals and morals of our nation. Due to the presidency being decided state by state, candidates only campaign in some states like North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, and Virginia. Due to this lack of campaigning and advertisement in over 18 states, people have implied and inferred that geography has to do with political views. For example, California‘s Electoral College votes usually go toward the Democratic candidate running for office Due to this, people imply that everyone in California supports liberal.
Furthermore, Californians believe that since their state is democratic, they should be too, just by geographical location Also, if your vote is not for the majority in your particular state, it may not count because your preferred candidate did not win the state, Therefore, the vote does not count toward your preferred candidate (Rich and Newton) Is this really how we want to elect our President? An amore effective way to elect the highest power in America is by popular vote It calls for whomever has more votes overall, to win. Plain and simple, After all, shouldn’t the president be elected by the people, for the people Popular vote helps 3rd party candidates who rarely win a state, yet sometimes they can make dent in the overall popular count to as much as 19%, According to a recent article written by some experts in this field: “The Electoral College is outdated, fundamentally flawed, open to abuse, and produced skewed results.
In order to ensure that a president serves the entire nation, […] the system should be changed so that the president is elected by direct voting by all citizens of the nation” By switching to popular vote, it would improve voter turnout and restore our once-great nation’s democracy. While this is true, according to a recent survey, 63% of Americans are in favor of popular vote over The Electoral College’s persuasion of voting. (Saad) Five states are currently in favor to rectify The Electoral College into popular vote.
Those states are Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois, Hawaii, and Washington, (Neufville) Under this plan, we would finally be equal when voting for the most prominent political role in America as we know it. With improved voter turnout, increased 3rd party candidate equality, and an overall more fair system, why wouldn’t we regulate popular vote? The Electoral College has failed America and our ideals This problem demands immediate response. The first step to restoring America’s morals and democracy is to abolish the unfair and biased nature of the horrid desecration way of voting thus called The Electoral College and promote the use of presidential popular vote among all states.
